So on a trip to visit my sister in NYC I decided to check some of the more prolific abandoned spots. Since I'm so new to all of this I've been trying to check out some places that are on their way to being demolished or renovated.
So of course I wanted to check the famed Gowanus Batcave in Brooklyn. I had read about how teenage squatters and crust punks once called it home. Since it has recently been purchased by for $7 mill it has been completely fenced in. It is also right next to the extremely polluted Gowanus Canal, which ironically has a Whole Foods next door (so much for healthy choices).
Well trying to find my way in was a tad bit difficult. They had sheet metal fastened to a chain link fence that was riddled in barbed wire. So I decided to take a walk around the edge of the canal.
Now when I say this place is polluted, I'm saying it's legendary. The whole river reaks of sewage. Its basically all poo water and chemicals. So as I was exploring any side entries into the property I found a loose piece of sheet metal and tore it off. I slid through into the surrounding property successfully.
There was a huge whole dug into the ground, where the canal was starting to pour into the property. So basically the canal now extended closer to the Batcave. As I was trying to make my way into the building, I basically was holding onto the wall with all my grip so as to not slide into the water. Of course that ended horribly. I was sliding down the wall and tried to grab onto a nearby rope. The rope unfortunately not connected to anything. I slid backwards into the water, and was actually entirely submerged in shit. I even swallowed some (gross). So I crawled out gasping for air. This exploration was unsuccessful. My phone was entirely smashed and water logged. I was however able to snap one picture successfully of the outside before calling it quits.
Right now I'm awaiting a Dr.'s appointment just to make sure I didn't catch Hep C or other nasties.
Safety first guys. I still haven't given up. I plan on getting into the building before it is entirely gone.
