Collapse is an amazing book.
None of it is new information. . . . but the world would do better to heed Diamond's words than, say, Al Gore's.
It's LAND USE, not emissions that drives change.






I find "how cities work" by alex marshall a very good book, it clearly explains why suburban sprawl is bad on a lot of levels, and is very readable!
One funny ting is that he cracks down on two other (greater) authorities on urban planning whose names evade me atm (i'm not at home) but they do look up at marshall.

BTW, IIVQ: I happen to frequent second hand bookstores A LOT (I am in the process of expanding my very extensive family archive into, well, in the future perhaps even a library), what's the price range you are still interested in buying that Charleroi tramways book? Should I for some unknown reason run into it AND recognize AND remember it, than I can buy it for you. That is, if I know how much money I may spend on your behalf

Micro mentioned it, but I have to also say, Julia Solis' New York Underground is fantastic, and it propelled me into urban exploring. Also, because Solis mentions The Mole People (by Jennifer Toth) a lot, I found a copy and read it... it blew my mind.

I also own (as does everyone) Access All Areas and all of the 'zines, which are completely invaluable. Also, I suggest Ghosts in the Wilderness which documents abandoned houses in the midwest. It's incredibly beautiful and haunting.

I'd say - 30 euro. If you find it cheaper - better. Also, I'm a fan of Douglas de Conicnk everything from him under 10 is good (except dode getuigen en blijvende blunders, which I already have). I also want to buy "I was 12 and biked to school".

We should meet! This sunday, I'm going to antwerp - to the tunnels and then afterwards some general urbex. Wanna come?

Suburban Nation ("the rise of sprawl and the decline of the american dream" by Andres Duany, Elyzabeth Plater-Zyberk and Jeff Speck. It is a little dryer and views things from a more technical standpoint than "how cities work" - whose subtitle is "suburbs, sprawl and the roads not taken" - which goes mainly from a socio-psychological view - but both are good books.

I recommend them both, if you're into city planning or even infrastructure in general.

I hate to break protocol here, but...Have any of you thought about publishing your own book? You could have several printed up and when you attended an event, exchange your book with other explorers, or just give them away.

industrial landscapes by bernd & hilla becher

pretty much anything by them is great, but this one covers many of the biggest industrial sites in europe and north america. probably 70% of what's in that book is gone now. check out that cover for example: J&L steel in pittsburgh. just rubble now.

I'm reading that book right now and I can't put it down! Definitely worth reading. Also "Why Buildings Fall Down" is a good one...you might end up being a bit more cautious (ie. paranoid) on the upper floors of abandonments after that one...

Oh my god, I LOVE the act of reading an actual book! I love the smell of old books. I love the look of bookcases filled to overflowing; I love libraries; I love collecting books. Today I bought five books (although one was a biography of Gaudi for Jono).

Wheeheeh! The first book arrived, Invisible Frontier by Deyo & Leibowitz, and my first attempts on a beer can padlock shim ended up opening the padlock.

An easy, cheap padlock and it was in my office, but still... A book and a trick learned, all in one day, I am satisfied enough to go sit in the sun

and read!
