An experience of mine, advice please

So the other day I was hanging out after school with time to kill, and, being the intrepid explorer that I am, i decided to go draining. I had already gone earlier that day (actually my friend and I had just finished), but the area near the school is riddled with pipes, some of which go a substantial distance but the long ones are also small, and only the short ones are large enough to stand up in. On my earlier trip with my friend, we went under the school in some hands-and-knees crawling height pipes. It was fine, I'd done it twice before, and he was new, but did fine as well. We had fun listening to people's conversations and prying pennies off of the cement walls, but eventually we headed back, and I decided to try out a different section just across the street. I was feeling a bit of pain in the knees, as one will when crawling on cement , but it wasn't too bad, so off I went. It was fine at first, but after a bit I was getting strangely exhausted, and decided to head back after the next gutter, manhole, or whatever. Once I got there, I rested a bit, but on the way back, my legs just gave out. It didn't happen suddenly, and I don't think it was because of some bad air, seeing as the pipes were large enough to do a kind of shuffling, bent-over half-walk and there were openings every 100 ft to 50 yds, so there was plenty of air circulation. I ended up crawling on my knees when I gathered the strength, but mainly just dragging myself out, and the only thing keeping me going was the promise of the outside world and my little speeches to myself about the human drive for survival (pathetic, I know, but it kept me from collapsing into a quivering mess, trapped below ground). I finally made it out, and now it is a few days after, and besides some bruises of the knees and elbows, everything is in working order except for a slight, almost negligible weakness of the legs.
So I ask you:
1. Has this sort of thing ever happened to anyone else, and in what ways?
2. What would you do in such a situation?
and 3. How did pennies (and two house keys ) get stuck into the wall anyways?

Thanks for listening to my rambling, happy exploring!

It most likely was just from your legs being overworked. You mentioned that you had been crawling through the pipes earlier. (Crawling on your knees can greatly weaken your cartilage, so maybe next time you should try some knee-pads of some kind, nothing too expensive. You could probably find a cheap pair at any hardware store.) And in the section you were in when you collapsed that you had to do a bent, half-walk, which can be very physically straining in extended periods. As for the pennies and keys..... maybe the builders were careless, or just making sure their ex couldn't get back in the house. ;)

If you can, squat and don't actually crawl until it is necessary to continue to your objective.

All joking aside you do have to be careful in lower areas especially drainage systems and storm drains/sewers. Because of how gasses work and there specific types of gravities even though you would think there would be plenty of air flow through a system like that, its very possible there wasn't. Such as if a day earlier some thing like a natural gas line may have leaked and the gas was traped in the system. since its heavier then air, normal air movement wont clear it out of there. It is possible there could be a build up of some type of fumes in those tunnels, but not enough to prove deadly over such a short exposure time. Gas's can work in weird ways, you could be in a tunnel full of really bad stuff, that u cant see or smell, and if ur standing up, since u could be above the gas your in fresh air, but if u kneel down u might be in the gas its self since it could be heavier then air and breating that stuff. and one of the signs of inhalation of a toxic substance is pain in joints and muscles, weakness, and any signs of dizziness or nausia.

It may not be this at all but just some thing to be careful about. If you dont feel right in a tunnel. its a good sign to be on your way out.

Hope that helps

It was more than exhaustion, my legs pretty much wouldn't do anything at all.

Dehydration?
Last Summer I went on an all day bike ride in 95+ degree weather, I drank a lot of water initially, but eventually I got less and less thirsty so I didn't bother to stop and drink anything. as I was less than 3 miles from home, I started going up a large hill, and suddenly my right leg seized up, then my left... I fell off the bike halfway in the road, halfway in the median on the side, I had to pull my body and bike up onto the grass using just my arms, eventually my legs un-seized and was okay, still sucked ass

another time I was in class and had just run the mile the day before, I didn't get enough liquid started feeling dizzy and walked to the water fountain and almost blacked out.

Did you drink enough water? crawling around in tunnels can be hot humid work...

and this does seem possible, although i didn't feel thirsty, but you said that neither did you
so it's definitely possible

That is not a symptom of dehydration, it is a symptom of over-exertion. You simply pushed something past where it was willing to go. It happens to me every year when I walk a parade route several times.

Whenever I get dehydrated I feel like shit, can barely lift anything (working out), eventually I puke, & everything goes back to normal.
It's happened to me twice this year.

not true. i've convinced people to drop explorinating (or UERing) for such other hobbies as coloring and tiddlywinks.
