It took a little less than a minute for the map to completely load in my browser. It wasn't empty though.

It's a little too much I think on the server and the browser to load ALL locations at once. Have you tried progressive loading?

I have similar problems loading the map; it's more pronounced in IE than in Firefox.

There is a JSON api I think for Google Maps (I did the "ZIP Code store locator" using it for a website I did long time ago), and with it, you can get coordinates of the centered map. Then, look up the radius in your site database. If you zoom out too far, just load either few random locations, or just load the few groups like you have now (where it shows a number in a circle).
