| | Let's Hike the Trails... < on 5/13/2009 8:23 PM >
| | | Because, many times, it pays to walk off the beaten path. The other day, I walked part of a trail that runs up behind my neighborhood, and several others. I plan on going back to explore more thoroughly. First, I found some sort of water-runoff area. (At least, that's what I think it is.) Lots of graffiti...
Kirby!
I have no idea. Reminds me of the Canadians in 'South Park'. ...And someone has misplaced their pants. I didn't poke them, because I couldn't find a big enough stick.
Up the trail, I found a barn.
Oh.
A collapsitated (collapsed AND dilapidated) barn.
Assorted debris! YAAAY! Okay, this was on the trail, but I love old-timey train trestles.
So, my fellow explorers, what lies off the beaten path in you southern state?

| | | Austin graffiti is so much better than the graffiti up here in the Metromess. (Actually, I haven't seen *anything* in Austin that's not better than here... if things had gone just a little differently in the mid-'80s, I'm sure I'd have never come to Big D.)

It's true. Austin is pretty freakin' awesome. And I also am a big fan of old railroad trellises. Very nice

| | | Very cool indeed. I like railroad trestles as well... (Did I spell that right? Oh well....)
I took my kids and sisters kids to a park once just to take their picture involving railroad trestles.
My mom is a fan of the Village People, so this shot was for her:
I think if I had a cool trail like that behind my house.... well, it would be awesome. Nice pics, thanks for sharing. Oh yea.. and that graffiti family reminds me of those stickers you see on some cars that has a sticker stick person for everyone in the family... maybe this is a transients version.

It'll be so nice when if they ever get the MetroRail up and running. Check out the back-country of Austin all the way downtown.
Posted by Secretsquirrel Damn , all that was on trails behind your neighborhood ? The old railroad trestles are awesome ! Did you walk the tracks above ?
|
I only did a tiny bit of the trail - it stretches in either direction a couple miles. Unfortunately, this time, I did not get up on the trestles. I was alone, and they've been running the aforementioned MetroRail trains, and they're supposedly silent. And with my luck, one would come roaring up when I was in the middle of a bridge.

Depends on what you're looking for. The graffiti I've seen in Austin isn't bold, space-filling, in your face. It's not a statement on the "urban" condition, and it's not a narcissistic explosion of someone's name (I'm looking at you, SEKT). Heck, in the spectrum of "graffiti art", the kind I like probably doesn't even count. This is one of my favorites, from a bridge over Town Lake: Just a simple doodle, but it captures an emotion that I just don't see on the walls of Dallas. Of course, it's all a matter of personal taste.

| | | Much better graffiti art than the normal stick figures, pot leaves and genitalia. Seems like there was a graffiti art thread somewhere. We should have one here. I think 2X had a bunch of pix at one time.. some good stuff. [last edit 5/19/2009 10:26 PM by SilentSearch - edited 1 times]

I used to shoot a bunch of graffiti alright, prolly 1000s of shots and theres some damn good work, er uhh I mean uhmm vandalism, in Big D unfortunately a lot of really nice street art got buried when they filled in the Good Latimer tunnel heres one a like from the backside of a south Dallas BBQ establishment too lazy to host the full size
and one from a bizarre kind of religious outfit of some kind I call it dueling inbred angels
the big one is the daddy angel, the little one is his son and his nephew [last edit 5/20/2009 1:44 AM by Explorer Zero - edited 1 times]

I think that it getting buried is kinda awesome. That way generations far into the future can excavate the site and find these curious primitive cave paintings... was it some sort of religious activity? Was it some sort of rite of passage into manhood? What does the inscription "F*ck the pigs!" And "4:20" mean in their language? [last edit 5/20/2009 1:04 PM by RevSM - edited 1 times]

The only problem is that the top few feet of all the pictures was crumbled away. But that's comparable to other lost treasures, like Pompeii and Atlantis. I think they'll look at the Angelina Jolie panel in the same way that archaeologists are examining the recently-discovered 40,000-year-old female figurine: they'll say "wow, men were jerks back then, too!"

| | | My first post here remains one of my favorite "off the trail" places. http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=66180
This place, however, is right in the forest-y area between my subdivision and the next. It was the subject of the first exploration post on my blog. The old settler's house.
A bed and a gross pillow. No matter where you go...
The wood floor that was here has burned and rotted away.
Thwarted.
The floor is pretty much a complete loss, anyway.
Carnage!
The on-property well. It's dried up, now.

| | | I'm heading to Austin for Memorial weekend. Planned stops are Devil's Waterhole at Inks Lake SP, and Barton Springs Pool where the crawdads are suspected of carrying off small children. So I'm taking my son.
