| | Do These Pictures Suck?? < on 3/25/2009 3:25 AM >
| | | Hey... i just got invited to become a part of a group of photographers that gets together once a month to photo document a certain part of the city of Philadelphia. we are trying to document every segment of the city in our own way. We have a really hard area on the outskirts of the the city which is kinda like the suburbs. all major roads with shopping centers and then all little houses that all look EXACTLY the same. These are the best shots of my month shooting there... are they any good?? which ones shouldnt i show them? This is my first time presenting to these people. Thanks for you help everyone.

| | | None of the material really invokes any response from me. I would just try and find better subject matter.

| | | They're a group of photographers? Do you mean like "I earn my living through my photos" photographer or "Hey I've always liked photography and I just got a digital SLR" photographer?

| | | no we dont earn a living or anything, we all have regular jobs and stuff we just loving taking photos. Part of the challenge is that the subject matter might be a hard, and you have to get some kinda decent photos out of the area. obviously there are some sweet areas that we do and we all get really good shots of stuff. it has been great for peoples portfolio...

| | | I'm a beginner myself (let's get that out of the way!) but I believe you can find subject matter almost anywhere if you know how to look for it. There are tons of resources available on the internet (e.g. http://www.nikonia...ion_101/index.html). Also, look at pictures here on uer and elsewhere. There are tons of excellent photographers here and you'll quickly see what works and what doesn't work and what you like and dislike. Of the subjects you've got I think #3 has a lot of potential but probably several seconds later, horizontal and maybe with a shallower depth of field so that the eye is drawn to the main subject. Whatever you show them will provide you with an opportunity to learn and grow as a photographer - as long as you are able to accept criticism. Just my 2 cents... Good luck.

| | | good work on the pics. Keep up the good work. Also remember not to always frame your subject in the middle of the photo.
PS. I like the lonely bus stop bench.

| | | The photos are fine and all, but none of them particularly seem to have any context. If your photo documenting the place, might be an idea to use wider shots which have more points of reference for anyone looking at them. Like... Include some shops and landmarks, street names, stuff people will see and recognise; that kinda thing. Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | You seem to have a grasp on what makes a decent composition, but the subject matter is boring.

| | | I don't get from your photos that this area is nothing but bland repitition. You can use that to your advantage. For example

| | | Thanks for all the advice... i know that the subject is bland, it was a very very hard few blocks to find interesting stuff... yokes... that is an amazing photography... i wish i had used it a little more to my advantage... next time maybe.

| | | The photos do not suck per say, but they do require a subject or focus of attention. I'm learning the "rule of thirds" or trying to, when deciding what to include in the frame. You can Google this. Otherwise the photos themselves are of good quality.

| | | 5 is good. The rest, while are well composed, as mentioned before, don't seem to have very intriguing subjects. I would not say that your photos suck at all however. They are good, but just need some work.

| | | Id say just keep photographing, and try to do so with subjects that inspire you. As a kid i was passionate about cars, and even though i wouldn't ever be able to make a good photograph, if i had to photograph some gorgeous muscle car, it always ended up looking good. The more you practice, the best they will look, you will get to learn what to include or not and all that stuff by experience

| | | My problem is the reverse. I get into a great photography environment then either my lack of skills or lack of understanding about the environment (like shooting with a UV filter in a drain - I don't know *what* I was thinking) in which I'm shooting let me down. I do like #5 though, but as others have said, for the other shots - there's no context.
