| | How do you reject bad UE partner offers? < on 1/18/2009 6:01 PM >
| | | So..I have a photographer friend who has seen a few of my UE photos from the east coast and he can tell I'm itching to do some exploring in LA. He decides to offer himself as an exploring partner. [Not hitting on me--he's a gay]. This guy, though a decent photographer, would be the *worst* person to explore with. He's awkward, clumsy, quite heavy-set (not in the muscle-y barrel-chested way) and just...I know he would fall and twist his goddamn ankle within 10 minutes of being at a location. How do I tell him it's not a good idea? Take him to a location that involves a strenuous hike?? I would like to note that I'm not saying you have to be some lithe, dexterous person to do UEing, but the guy is just one big ball of awkward. An accident waiting to happen. So..any suggestions are much appreciated. EDIT: Spelling error [last edit 1/18/2009 6:04 PM by hey_its_di4n4 - edited 1 times]

| | | Every time someone sees my photos they always ask me to bring them with me next time I go, I say sure and then never tell them, they usually forget, unless it's a really hot girl then I might consider it. ;)

| | | I have been exploring with a VERY large guy. One that when I saw him I figured that a 10 minute walk would wipe him out. How very wrong I was! He made it through the day very well. He even slipped on a piece of plywood under the snow, one leg ahead and one behind with an ankle twisted in a very odd position. Once we took his camera from him he picked himself up, brushed himself off and we were off again. All this after a day of exploring before, lots of booze the night before and pretty much no sleep. It turned out to be I am so sure, one of the most memorable trips I will ever have. Edit: You might want to give the guy a chance. I am very embarrased I even doubted his abilities. A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind. |

Yeah that's exactly what I'm saying. I think all large people are accidents waiting to happen. The guy is incredibly clumsy and awkward. I've been in a group and we jumped a fence to get somewhere. Instead of hopping with us he spent 10 minutes walking around the fence. I don't think he knows what UEing can entail. Plus if we got caught I know he wouldn't be able to keep his cool at all.

Yeah I should probably give him a chance. I'll try to find something easy that isn't a huge time investment to get there. Who knows!

so you all hopped the fence and he actually found an easier and less obvious and attention attracting way into the same place ? sheesh, yeh sounds like a liability for sure.

Thanks, dick. I've explored with many "large" people over the past 11 years. Not one has "slipped" or fell or died. In fact, they are some of the best exploring partners that I've ever had.

| | | Meet up with him somewhere public using the pretense that it's a planning session for the future UE. Dress as girly as you can, & bring a bible, crucifix, & water in a jar labeled "HOLY WATER." When he shows up, start calling him Adam, read passages from the bible, hit him with the crucifix, spray the water on him, and at the same time, start making out with him. When he tries to jump back & ask what the hell is wrong with you, tell him that you had a devine vision which told you that you must 'convert' him into being a heterosexual, and that he's to call you Eve. He will probably run away from you & leave you alone, or at least certainly not want to be alone with you in various abandonments, based on your actions in public.

Some locations require climbing and entrances that are tiny spaces that even I can barely fit through so I'm kinda skeptical.

Yeah, totally, 30 seconds is way more of a liability than 10 minutes, way more.
I just tell them it's too cold and that I'm not going out. And then I rescheduled to a time I knew they wouldn't be able to make. It's worked well so far, who knows what the summer will bring.

| | | I am usually loathe to bring along a hefty pal on runs, but it totally depends on the location. If there's a good chance you need to sprint a few blocks and hop fences, maybe not, but if it's just a matter of not being dumb (falling down a hole, not being quiet, etc.) then I don't see any reason to exclude anyone. To put it bluntly, I'd rather have a fat guy that can be quiet and safe than a tiny girl that, yeah, can fit in that pipe, but still doesn't know what she's doing*. *substitute genders as you will.

yes, 30seconds of being seen on top of a fence is more of a liability than not being seen at all. ( so we agree )
...sure there are small spaces larger people have issues getting into, but most people have some kind of limitation to their skill sets or physicality...personally mine is climbing, i just dont have a head for heights. |
