| | | *blush* Well, it just seems like the right thing to do....
Gas here is still under $3.40 a gallon. (Barely). Talk about price gouging!

I'm not going to disagree with this, but it really is just the right thing to do, like Happie said. If you do need space, you'll need to be cool with a bunch of big, cool dogs. Also, I have a bunch of leftover jello shots from my last party, so we can welcome you in "style".

| | | Now that it looks like Gustav wasn't as bad as feared, I'm really curious how New Orleanians feel about the evacuation plans. Did they get it right this time? Should the city have been evacuated at all? Will the false sense of security kick in next time, and lead to people staying when they shouldn't? I don't know how the Racetrac in Garland (I-635 & NW Hwy) kept its prices so low, right up through Friday when everyone else went over $3.40, but they've just risen a notch in my opinion. Kinda like on 9/11/01, when every gas station raised their prices by almost double -- my goodness, some places were charging over $2.00 a gallon! Except for the Phillips 66 stations, which held the line at nearly pre-attack levels through the entire 24-48 hours of uncertainty and fear. I've bought my gas from them every chance I get since. In the not-everyone's-an-angel department: I took my son camping at beautiful Lake Bonham State Park over the weekend. The ranger said he'd gotten a call from someone claiming to be an evacuee, and demanding that the ranger kick someone out of their campsite so that they could move in. The ranger told him where to go, and it wasn't a campsite. But from what I've heard on NPR reports this morning, the evacuations were much more orderly, and the evacuees -- being treated like people this time -- were much appreciative.

disclaimer: I live just south of Baton Rouge and did NOT have to evacuate I think the evacuations were justified. The storm damage certainly didn't end up at anywhere near Katrina levels, but it was impossible to know before it actually hit. It was looking like we might get slammed straight up by a Cat 4 hurricane for awhile... and that's a very bad thing. Orleans Parish finally started letting folks come back home on 9/4. Many other parishes began opening up on 9/3. I don't believe it would have been safe to do it earlier. Gustav essentially plunged the entirety of southeast Louisiana into the dark ages; almost no one had power after the storm hit. That means no gas, no food, no traffic lights, downed powerlines everywhere, roads blocked with debris... it wasn't pretty. Gustav was far worse than Katrina in this respect - there was extensive damage to the electrical transmission system. My power finally came back on yesterday, and I'm lucky. Some folks may have to wait weeks.

| | | I saw a map of Louisiana (on Weather Underground, I think) that showed something like 2/3 of the parishes in the state had 100% power outage at one point, and most of the rest had 50% or more power out. And the biggest rains were in the center of the state -- 15 inches plus! NO "only" showed 8-10 inches. I wish there were more on the news about the success of the evacuation and return. The numbers I heard were 2 MILLION people successfully moved out of the city -- a whopping 95% -- and then successfully moved back in. No incidents. No riots. No tragedy. Which means, no news. That's bigger news to me than either Obama's or McCain's speeches, or even the prospect of an unmarried teenage mom in the White House. It's freakin' awesome. FireworksOrStars, when you get back, can you give the city a big hug for me?

I'm heading back in the morning. I will certainly do that for you, haha. I was thrilled with how well the evacuation went off. 95% is an astounding figure. Let's just hope we don't have to repeat it again this year (looks like Ike's headed toward the Gulf, though not this far west yet ).
