| | | Posted by eidolon I went on a little walkabout on my way to get some stuff from Fred Meyer, and found a rather cryptic, and gigantic, building. http://maps.google...5021&t=h&z=18&om=1 It's massive, bay doors along both of the longer sides, and wide as the whole block with a parking lot as big as the building itself and half again. There are cars parked outside in the satellite image, but when I went there the entire property was completely deserted. There are no signs or markers to indicate what its purpose is. Anybody have a clue as to what's in there? I'd love to check out the plywood plant if you feel like having some company. Unfortunately I'm carless for the foreseeable future, so that could complicate my exploring efforts.

I think that used to be a fire station if I remember right....

Thats going to be a problem. At the one pipe I know of, there's 3 cameras watching it with 24 security.

| | | Hmm... when I was there I saw some unguarded, uncamera'd hatches and manholes, they just had a pesky fence around them. It was a little early in the evening to be hopping fences.

I hunted around, every access point I saw was right in the open and surrounded by some resilient looking fences. I went during the day so there were people around from the businesses nearby, night time would likely make an approach easier. I also found a couple acres fenced off for an outflow construction project (there was a big sign), presumably for the new system. Not much going on there yet though. I did see a foundation where there used to be an industrial type building there near the road, no new construction though. [last edit 10/12/2007 2:31 AM by eidolon - edited 1 times]

| | | My avatar is from that factory. Someone sprayed a really sweet looking Storm Trooper over it less than a week after I took that picture, but now it's just random garbage. That place is walking distance from my house, I hang out there a lot. Last time I was there I noticed the disused crane on the water is partially tipped over. I wish I had a picture, it looks really weird. Structurally speaking, I'm not even sure how it could've happened without heavy machinery. Maybe they're tearing it down, which would be unfortunate. There's a shaft to the big pipe right outside The Montage restaurant at the east end of the Morrison Bridge. When the restaurant is closed, there's no one around. Security was non-existant as far as I could tell. Probably worth checking out. [last edit 10/13/2007 4:51 AM by Rinker's Revenge - edited 2 times]

| | | I think I'll go scout it tomorrow. I don't have a means to get across the water, so I'll just take some telephoto shots. How nasty is the water? If it's not toxic nasty, I might just swim. The crane was apparently in use until 2005 and it appears to have been used to dismantle some equipment before it was moved into the center for storage. '07

There never was a factory ham. It was Riedel Environmental services It's definitely not something you'd go visit while visiting from out of town. Quit calling it FACTORY HAM and it's a very misleading name. It's not, and never was called that. This is the thread which addresses the location by the correct name. http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=57278 There's really nothing to explore and it's really just shells of vandalized buildings.

| | | The Factory Ham looks like it's in an interesting enough area of town that it'd be worth a quick pass through while checking out the surroundings. It's not like it's an exceptionally long trip if you're already in Portland anyway. Lots of interesting graffiti too, even if the buildings aren't stellar. It seems like it's one of the more interesting truly abandoned sites in the city as well, there's not a whole lot (at least that I've found/heard about) that's actually abandoned, most places are at least partially occupied or locked up incredibly tight and monitored while between lease/sale.

| | | Well, looks like this place made it into the news. There is an article in the Sentinel, the newspaper for North Portland this week. I went down there a week ago and there is now an indoor skate park. I really love the graffiti, its one of the few places artists can work and do amazing murals. Also, the ladder on the back of the building that allowed access to the top for some amazing views has had the bottom two thirds removed. Someone has already installed a thick rope to provide access.
