| | | Usually it depends on the type of building and the time that it was built in. Most large structures like hospitals, factories, schools, etc built before the mid 80s will have asbestos in them. Smaller buildings and houses might have small amounts, but usually won't. It's always a good idea to do some research on the place you want to explore before you go, so you have a good idea what to expect there and what equipment to bring. Hope this helps somewhat.

Yup, just find a place that's already been abated before demolition. You can tell easily because they plastic off the windows and doors and never remove them after abatement. You can find a place built entirely of wood or a place built after 1978, but even that is no guarantee.

| | | I'd suggest going before abatement.. All that asbestos being thrown around stirs up a lot of dust. Just don't disturb it and you'll be fine. -Tom

| | | Asbestos is common because often one of the contributors to a place remaining abandoned is the prohibitive cost of asbestos abatement.

Anything built after 1970 or so. Asbestos risk is minimal unless things containing it like pipe insulation and nine inch tiles are disturbed. I think people over react though. Definitely wear a respirator when there are ripped insulation pipes and such just to be safe. [last edit 6/7/2008 7:36 AM by Deuterium - edited 1 times]

| | | Most active buildings even have asbestos in them. Its much more common than youd like to think. But as long as it is still hanging on the pipes or sitting inside the walls, its not a threat at all. But when it is disturbed and the fibers get into the air, then you need to worry.

I cant tell if this is a joke or not? Sky-scrapers are built in the city. In the city, they use every square inch of space. Thats why they build sky-scrapers, it saves lateral space by using vertical space. They would never leave one alone, they are far too valuable, and are sold... not abandoned. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun exploring them.

People tend to over-react. They found asbestos in some floor tiles at my high school during a minor repair and it was in the student news letter, parent news letter. Everyone freaked out.

Its really everywhere. The reason they make a big deal out of it is because of the off chance that someone gets hurt by it lawyers will have a field day.

| | | Just invest in a respirator. Then you can have a free for all anywhere you want and not have to worry. Just make sure and burninate you clothes when you get home.

| | | Asbestos is very tricky and I would say better safe than sorry. Maybe "burninating" your clothes would be going a little far but the asbestos fibers can get trapped in clothing and become airborne after you take your respirator off and then you would be inhaling them. Just be careful. Here is an excellent thread that helped me understand post-exploring asbestos safety - http://www.uer.ca/...d=10223&currpage=1 More on Burninating - http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/Trogdor edit- added links [last edit 6/15/2008 1:26 AM by Wilk - edited 2 times]

| | | sick, you are the man. minus the burminator link (???) thanks though. have some respirators on the way, i'm sure i'll feel like a goof wearing them but at least i'll be able to relax a bit and enjoy the surroundings a bit more instead of rushing thru because of the stench/etc (i know the stench will stay but at least it won't mean anything anymore). the stench of the building that is thanks

I said this because I know of one in northern russia. abandoned shopping building. 40 floors into the earth and 50 floors high. 1st elevator got stuck on the 68th floor and the cable for the 2nd elevator broke. started climbing down thanks to some mountain climbing equipment (thankyou REI)and aparently the elevator didn't like me very much , because it came loose just as I was reaching the bottom. thank god for adrenaline. I didn't ask for this kind of heart attack. all I wanted was a damn beta tape player. (back in the days when VHS video cassettes were taking all the media, "beta" was the runner up) [last edit 6/17/2008 2:36 PM by Ethan Thomas - edited 1 times]
