| | | Budget Inn Fire < on 2/6/2008 4:14 PM >
| | | Last spring a Budget Inn in a South Atlanta suburb caught fire. According to the news reports, the fire started on a stack of discarded mattresses behind the building, near a gas meter. Arson is suspected. Most of the occupants of this Budget in were residents. No fire sprinklers were installed. A family of five was trapped in a second floor room and failed to be rescued in time. It is stunning to me that in the city that lays claim to the deadliest hotel fire in US history (the Winecoff, December 1946) we still allow hotels to operate without adequate fire protection. These pictures were taken after the fire investigation and before the demolition crew arrived. My heart goes out to the family and friends of those who died. I support efforts to require commercial residences and hotels to have adequate fire suppression equipment, and be maintained and inspected properly and regularly. I hope these pictures help drive that point home.

| | | Interesting place. A+ for originality. I guess that water tower next door did not help much.

| | | How sad and rotten is that. Thanks for sharing them though, more people need to see how devastating fire can be. My young cousin and her friend died in a fire in the 70's,another case of a lack of alarms and such.

| | | Ditto on #8, that one is awesome. It was also a lack of sprinkler system that allowed the fire at the Days Inn off I-75 to cause so much damage (that's the one I was telling you about the other day). That hotel has been abandoned for years, but is finally about to be renovated and restored.

| | | Yeah, I keep meaning to bust into that place. They're so slow, it seems like all of the work is being done by a couple of guys.

| | | #8 is truly stunning. If there was an urban exploring photo contest, I would vote for it. It looks like that was one hell of a fire. I'm not sure fire sprinklers would have been enough to save the family. It might have slowed the fire, but it probably wouldn't have stopped it. I wonder who decided to "hit the mattresses."
