| | | Yes, graffiti can be artistic. Doesn't stop it from technically being vandalism, though. Just artistic vandalism.

| | | Posted by Glass Is it art? Yes. Does most 'art' suck? Yeah. Do people still take pictures of their cat yawning, copyright it, and try to pass it off as a masterpiece? Yeah. Walking through an abandoned building and looking at the graffiti is the equivalent of looking at deviantart.com's 'Newly Uploaded'. dA/Graffiti: *half-finished anime girl/tag* *porn/unshaded throw-up* *drawing of boobs/more boobs* *master painter's sympathetic rendering of a prostitute / awesome portrait of clown as seen above* *more crap/more crap*

| | | Posted by blitz im not talking about the legal meaning, i'm talking about what people see as vandalism spitting on the ground is legally vandalism, do you think your a vandal when you spit on the ground? don't think so when people spray paint random crap like "weed" etc etc like i was talking about it, i consider that vandalism. while i dont think that someone who is trying painting cool stuff that isn't really offensive is a vandal, i tend to think of that more as graffiti. yes, they are both illegal and considered vandalism, but the difference is all in what you are thinking when you do it. ( guess?) sorry i'm not completely up to part on my vandalism laws :\

"What is art?". There is no answer. This is along the line of "is apple pie better than peach pie?" "What do you think is art?" Everyone has an answer. We have laws to be as objective as possible. The law varies from place to place, although most states have something in common. For Illinois:
Sec. 21‑1.3. Criminal defacement of property. (a) A person commits criminal defacement of property when the person knowingly damages the property of another without his or her consent by defacing, deforming, or otherwise damaging the property by the use of paint or any other similar substance, or by the use of a writing instrument, etching tool, or any other similar device. Act of "graffitti art" "street art" performed with aforementioned contraband willfully First time offense is a class A misdemeanor provided it doesn't cost more than $300 for abatement and it isn't on a church or a school. Class 4 felony for subsequent offenses or if the cost of abatement exceeds $300 on your first offense or it's on a church or school and the cost of removal is less than $300. Class 3 felony if your criminal defacement cost more than $300 to remove and it's on a church/school.
As you can see, interpreting within the context of law is much more objective. [last edit 4/5/2007 5:23 AM by Deuterium - edited 1 times]

Now see, that pisses me off in some way. I can understand having a blanket problem with any and all graffiti. I don't think it's terribly intelligent, but I can understand. But art, man. Arrrrt. You can't put limits like that on art. Robots destroying each other can be art. A play is art. Plays are less tangible and permanent than graffiti. Step off, man. Step off.
