| | | From http://cac.mcgill....es/schmontreal.htm A small but nice collection of photos of Montreal from the 1980s. The site navigation's a bit fucked up, but it's well worth a browse, if only for the pre-touristification pictures of Old Montreal and the Old Port.
It's great to be alive! |

| | | wow nice find, it's always a pleasure too look at old viewpoint. Those pictures were nothing special at the time, like old porto they get better with age! at least 20 years of age. Late vintage porto and photo are nice but not as good. Thanks for sharing.

| | | great find mapman, that first pic though is a lot earlier than the early 80s, the peel basin was filled in in the early 70s with detritus from the metro. that third pic, i forgot how big that grain elevator was, as a child my dad took me down there to see some warship in port and we walked by it. the last one gives a good view of overdale before the demolitions! | | | I know we can't live in the past and Montreal is always changing but man, do I miss the 80's. There was something very sexy and real in this dirty, not cared for downtown/old Montreal era. A lot more real I find than it is now, all cleaned up and light up and touristy. Thanks for those amazing pics!

At the risk of dating myself, I'm old enough to remember when the only way over to Nun's Island was by boat. When I was about 5, a neighbour from the Village took my mother and I over to visit the farm on the Island, before it was all demolished. I don't remember much about the visit, except that the outboard sheared a pin mid-river, and had to be repaired before continuing onto shore. EGV

Maybe your just not lucky. I'm not saying you don't love this country. I'm just wondering how much worse it could be if you were on the other side. Yes, God does speak to you. Thank you so much for putting those up, and for the reference. I found the pictures of Old Montreal really nice as I worked for a customs broker on McGill street, and picked-up and delivered documents from businesses in the area. I well remember what it looked like, and the pictures match my recollection. From what I've seen, it's been cleaned-up, even sterilized, I daresay. I kinda liked it gritty, the way it was. Also, some of his pictures dating from the mid-to-late '50s (at least from the cars on the street) showed such architectural details as the old green shutters, like the ones we had on our houses in the Village. Thanks again for helping to bring back some memories. EGV

You're right! I just wish there was a date... given from the man's bio that he moved to Canada in 1951-52, the picture is no earlier than that. If I had to guess, I'd say that they dated from 1954-55. EGV

| | | Great pics. It can be easy to forget that Victoria Square is one of the most "changed" places in the city from about 25-30 years ago, yet still ridiculously the same. Actually Chinatown would be the big winner in that category if you go back a little further...... No, the Old Port would be, no, it would...lol! Nun's Island looks weird because I don't remember not seeing trees along the north shore and I grew up practically across the street from it. The icebreaker bridge is not there and are we sure Champlain is actually finished at that point in time? CD

i had read somewhere that it had to do with the fact the feds already owned the jacques cartier, with the construction of the seaway the ports canada people took over the better part of the mercier and now the 3rd span to the south shore was being built by the feds. all that said, when all was said and done the approches to the champlain were later built to atwater and the bonaventure is still federal until the lachine canal and between the canal and the tunnel the bonaventure is city owned [last edit 3/13/2007 10:22 PM by nostra-YOUPPI! - edited 1 times]
