| | | Hah, Somewhere on 276 between Rockwall and Quinlan... who knows what the hell possessed somebody to live in this thing (it had power at one point).

| | | Thanks for posting. I have driven past it and wondered about it. I read an article about those things; some Dane or Norwegian fellow designed them. Not too many here in America.

| | | There's a modern, more livable version: Monolithic Dome Institute In Italy, Texas (30 miles or so south of Dallas on I-35E), there's a factory where they make forms for Monolithic Dome houses. They look like the Quinlan UFO house, except without the legs. The factory itself is a giant caterpillar made from several domes joined together, and the complex includes several examples of dome homes, some open for tours, some abandoned but left in place for testing purposes.
Nearby, if it hasn't been torn down yet, was Starship Pegasus, a pizza parlor and game room shaped like a Star Trek starship, with a flatter-than-usual dome and warp nacelles added to the back. It aspired to be part of a science-oriented park featuring all the planets, in Monolithic Dome form. Unfortunately, they closed a year or so ago. It would be a tricky place to explore, though -- I hear a massive truck stop just went in next door.

| | | I hope you guys got a load of the thread on the abandoned townhouses in Taiwan. That UFO reminds me of a really silly yurt. My friend had a wild yurt in the woods near Seattle with hardwood flooring and a nice skylight/window type deal.

| | | A pig? That's all ya got? The Goose, in Hazard, KY (one Z for the real town, not two ZZs for the fictional county), has been a community fixture since 1940.
The building isn't in commercial use any more, but it's well-maintained. But if you decide to make a pilgrimage to eastern Kentucky, take the side roads. You can find entire abandoned cities under the kudzu. Mucho details (including Oprah) at: http://hazardkentucky.com/more/goose.htm
