| | The best in the UK...? < on 12/31/2006 1:06 AM >
| | | after exploring the majority of the remaining asylums in the UK, this has got to be the best in my opinion.. It has seen better days, but Cane Hill, for me, is one of the most atmospheric explores ever...absolutely can't get enough of the place.. let me know what you think of these 6...
turk ;)

| | | Overall you have captured the tone and atmosphere of cane hill very well, even if the pics aren't that amazing. Well done for not putting a shitty border round them all!!! 1 Quite a nice pic, good warmth - but the jagged compression puts me off. 2 I wouldn't have cut the bottom off the legs 3 Ok shot, shame about the blown highlights on the wall. Thats what you get when you shoot low latitude digital. 4 Interesting if not a little confusing. 5 Best of the bunch, simple but great. 6 I think that could have been framed a little better, slighty awkward composition. You certainly like to shoot with a warm white balance - don't over do this. Keep up the good work.

| | | Posted by robdobi i wish the whites were whites, the photos with windows suffer from the same problem as the "boxing day" thread from a few days ago, everything just looks off with the windows having that pink tint to them.

That's turkeys style - he likes a warm white balance.

| | | cheers guys...the I must admit, I love warmer looking photo's..I really want to get a wider angle lens, not ridiculous, just so I can shoot in more confined spaces..the mortuary at cane hill it very hard to shoot with an 18-55 standard lens... cheers anyway, P.S. stoop, what program you use to re-size..?? turk ;)

| | | Photoshop! It's the best, although even JD uses another programme for JPEG compression Even using quicktime pro (£20) or gimp (free) would be better than what your using. st00p

| | | I really like this set, with the exception of number four. All of them are really interesting and composed very well but number four strikes me as very incomplete. Maybe take a new angle? The piano itself is really cool though. It seems to be in relatively good shape. This seems like another great site to hit. Too bad I'm stuck in the U.S.

| | | It's not so much the colour in the windows that bugs me, it's the luminosity level. If the windows are blown, let 'em be blown. Most people here just assume pure white (ie: R, G and B all reading at 255) is evil, but when you lower everything to 75%, it makes everything look flat. They'd look better with the blown-out whites actually being white, let the glow around them give you the warm tone you're looking for. If the camera recorded those windows as pure white, painting them pink won't save them. If you go back, shoot 2 pics, one for the windows and one for the room, and layer mask them in photoshop (but for the love of all that's holy, don't hdr them). Or just accept the fact that windows are bright. There's nothing wrong with pure white if you can keep it under control and make it work for you. Compositionally these are pretty good, but they don't really stand out from the thousands of asylum pics posted here over the last few months already. They're good, but they're not necessarily better than hundreds of similar photos, and with only the photos and no information, there's nothing to make these any different. You can go with context/stories/whatever, or try to stretch yourself creatively, like, say, Mustard Gas Party's balanced chairs (although obviously not that exact thing, but you get the idea). The exception for me is the piano photo - I like that it takes a minute to figure out what's going on. It's composed nicely, good tones, and the background is nice and fuzzy, but not too fuzzy.
yep. |

| | | cheers buddy... I didnt really edit the windows.. All I have done to edit the pictures is to sharpen some...and also introduced a tone graduated tint to some area's.. I dont understand how the slightly pinky windows came about... turk ;)

| | | What software are you using? Do you use any auto-anything? Cause it really looks like the camera blew out the windows, and either you or the software tried to tone it down. I don't know, they're nice photos, the processing just looks a bit messed up is all.
yep. |

| | | To be honest mate, unless I feel strongly about the way a picture is taken I won't comment, purely because I dont feel I am good enough, or qualified enough to "critique" and tell people how they could improve the shot.
