| | | The Most Best Camera...Not! < on 12/17/2006 7:35 AM >
| | | I took a little trip today to test out the new Canon s3. Im not to happy with the result. I’m better off to go back to my Minolta 700, which I am. I’m going to be taking it back on Sunday therefore; I took it out to test what it can do. Its fine when taken of a flat object, but when taken of three or more objects in the pic the focus gets lost. It doesn’t know what to focus on. The light it lets in to the camera is not a lot, you need to turn up the aperture to the highest and still you need a tripod to take it. It can't take any shots in the dark, only with lots of amounts of light. Over all I am going to take this one back, it's not doing what I thought a $600 dollar camera would do, so from now on I am going to be going back to my Mintola 700, where I can set the focus and no more problems!
Here are some I took on my trip, I took most of the day trying to edit them. There was not much color in them and the focus was just out there. Let me know what you think of them. There is nothing really special, but lets see what you guys think about the camera and shots.

| | | If its a 600 dollar camera Im sure it can do everything you need it to, you should probably learn the proper use of the functions. What kind of canon do you have?

Ya I have leaned all the proper uses of it. I guess what I’m looking for in a 600 dollar camera is not there. It’s a Canon Powershot S3, and yes I do live in Canada.

| | | He doesn't need a 10D. He needs to read the manual more carefully and learn how to properly post-process his photos. Other people have been able to get great results out of even cheaper digital cameras. There's no reason why he can't too.

I have read the manual. That has nothing to do with this. Yes people have taken better shots with lower prices, but what im saying, This camera has to much noise...I don't think the manual can fax that. It can't take pic's in dark places the aperture don't go up every far. Other cameras can go as far and higher. All I’m saying is that this can't do much.
Tron_2.0 Thanks, I will be looking in to that. This might be what I’m looking for. Is there any stores that would carry this camera?

| | | You dont need larger aperture for night shots. Its called a cable release/remote a tripod and patients for long exposures. As for noise try changing you ISO setting.

I'm continually surprised by the number of explorers with SLRs that don't have cable releases. I'm even more surprised that there are DSLRs out there which do not have cable releases available for them. That's a must buy in my book. Don't think you can get one for the P+Ses though.

defintely annoying, or they have proprietary releases. i dont have a remote but i usually use the 2 sec timer which also automatically locks the mirror up.

Yeah, it's part of my workflow when taking a photo, compose, focuss, set up shutter f/stop etc, set timer and go.

| | | Actually I just got the Canon S3 for Christmas and I beg to differ I had the same problem as you until I started using manual mode.
These were taken with no flash and using only available light, shutter speed 15 seconds, aperture 3.2.ISO speeds in manual mode dont make a real difference in photo quality. Theres not a whole lot of noise in these their actually quite clear,so maybe you should try that.(You will need a tripod)

| | | I’ve used the manual mode. It didn't seem to fix thing's up are me...It also told me to raise the flash for just about every thing. As well as I didn't consider using the tripod because of the image stabilization. It didn't seem to work every well. IV got my eye on the Canon-Rebel XTI. But any way have fun with your new camera. Cheers

you cant expect IS to work magic. it will add 2-3 stops at best. work off a tripod, lower the iso to control noise and do longer exposures.
