| | | So what's the best thing to do when you encounter cops, guards, security people, etc. either in or outside an abandoned place? What do you guys do? Any advice or suggestions are appreciated!

| | | If you look legit (ie you aren't dressed like Commander-Cobra with a toolkit) just explain that you were looking around. Having a camera on you would help. If that's all you're up too, it'd have to be a real jerk of a cop to bust you just for walking around. Of course, if you broke a lock, or you're laden with night-vision goggles and climbing gear, or you're UEing an active hospital basement or something, you're gonna have a hard time with the doe-eyed halo-wearing act.
It seemed like a good idea at the time... |

| | | Rip out the machine gun Commando style and just mow them motherfuckers down. Works well for those fuckers who leave their dirty dishes in the sink at the office as well This is the generally accepted best technnique:

| | | If the place is abandoned there will be no guards to encounter. Most cops will not bother you if the place is abandoned, and your not vandalizing, etc. Don't run or walk away from the cop if they want to talk to you or if they're looking for you and spot you. Be calm, don't act squirrely, keep your hands were he can see them. Answer any questions directly without hesitation, avoid lies whenever possible. Don't put yourself in a position that you can't explain, and dealing with a cop is usually no big deal.

I'm not really a big fan of cops but this tends to work in many situations not just when you're exploring. Cops love brutal honesty because they tend to hear alot of bullshit. When dealing with cops being honest polite and not kissing ass tends to work very well. Kinda like in fear and loathing in las vegas only ya don't have to kiss em(usually).

Cops are like most people; they get offended when someone tells them an indiscreet lie(s). If brutal honesty means telling them shit they need to take action on, it's not in your interest to do so. Lying by omission is the way a smart man deceives. Many cops are well trained, educated, and some have extensive field experience; lie only if necessary. Most cops aren't gonna jack you up just for kicks, but don't push your luck. Remember too you may encounter the same one again. I have. If your first meeting left a good impression on them it can temper the following encounter(s). More then one cop has let me go places they would gives someone else a warning or worse for. It never pays to piss a cop off.

| | | One time I ran into an officer of the MPLS park board police just after emerging from a drain. Soaked, muddy, and carrying water-proof backpacks, I think we might have looked rather suspicious. But we actually turned it around by asking him questions if he knew the history and stuff behind them and all that. I think he was just concerned that we were vandalizing the stuff, and your average vandal doesn't know very much about water tables and sewer separation and stuff. So he left us alone.
