| | | | | Visiting Montréal - 04/20 'til 04/23 < on 4/16/2006 9:37 PM >
| | | My wife and I are going to be in Montreal from this coming Thursday until Sunday morning. Outside of u.e., what would the locals there strongly suggest some visitors do while in the city for a few days? What's something not to miss in downtown Montreal? I'm talking museums, galleries, theaters, shopping... all the touristy stuff. Thanks! C.

| | | Montreal is about walking, if the weather is nice, I suggest you the following streets:
Laurier street, in Outremont: a nice , fancy shopping street (Laurier métro station, walk west) Mont-Royal street: One of the great streets of Montreal, for eating, shopping, taking a drink, going to a yuppie club or whatever. (Mont-Royal Métro station, walk east or west of the station) Saint-Denis street: In the quartier Latin, a good place for restaurants and hippie stores. (Berri-UQAM métro station, Saint-Denis exit, walk north, you can go up the hill and walk all the way north to Saint-Joseph) Sainte-Catherine street: Not my favorite, but definetly the biggest and longest tourist/shopping street in Montreal. My suggestion to see it completely from one end to another is to get off at Beaudry Metro station (in the Gay District) and walk all the way west to Atwater metro station. Some parts are definetly run-down, but that's part of Montreal! Saint-Laurent street: The Montrealer's favorite. Old shops opened since the 30s, old jewish smoked meat, yuppie stores, everything that makes Montreal. The most interesting sections are between Sherbrooke and Van Horne streets, but if you keep walking north there is Little Italy. Bernard street: Upscale street in the rich Outremont. everything there is either too expensive or too fancy for you . [last edit 4/16/2006 10:42 PM by cjb - edited 1 times]

| | | Thanks, CJB. Now I've just got to get myself a street map of Montreal. I'm ashamed to admit that my French skills are poor, though my wife is better at it. Am I going to be at a disadvantage, or is Montreal fairly friendly for an anglophone? C.

| | | Absolutely MUST in Montréal : -Montreal's famous Smoke Meat (may I suggest Ben's Smoke Meat, McGill station, corner of Metcalf & Sainte-Catherine). Unchanged restaurant from the 1940's, at 2am, you have a good change of running into a politician or a music star. Trudeau was known to go have a smoke meat there on saturdays at 2am, saw him a few times. -Go up on top of the Mont-Royal, see the view from the Belvédère and if weather is nice, go have a walk in the Côte-des-Neiges Cemetery (one of the most beautiful cemetery in the world). A little-known secret : if you go to the Cemetery office (which is on any map you'll fin in the cemetery), you can ask to get a map of all the famous people buried there. In recent years, Maurice "The Rocket" Richard was buried there. Lots of very, very elaborated tombstones and absolutely beautiful place. And all this is free! -If weather is nice, you can go in the old port of Montreal and try to rent some bikes and go bike all along the Lachine Canal (they'll hand you maps when you rent your bikes). Not only will you probably recognize many of the UEDB locations, you'll have a great smooth ride and it's very very nice -Old Port of Montreal - you can go all the way up to the Clock tower (if your knees are in good shape hehehe), also the view of Montreal from the Champs-de-mars (old battlefield in old Montreal, right next to City Hall and also location of the first Montreal's fortifications) -Sainte-Catherine for shopping is a must. If you want to experience the "Montreal undergroud", you can actually go from Cours Mont-Royal shopping center (Metcalf/Ste-Catherine) to Complexe Desjardins (Bleury/Ste-Catherine) inside through tunnels without coming outside. Other nice stuff to do : -If you like nature and all that, Biodome is unique in the world and you can also visit Montreal Olympic Stadium and go up the tower (a bit pricey though to go up the tower but it does make great pics and Biodome is closed on Mondays, yeah, pinguins are unionized I guess) http://www2.ville....ca/biodome/bdm.htm -Also a great structure to see and a nice visit if you're into nature, Biosphere of Montreal is in a big geodesic dome and was the USA pavillion during the Universal Exhibition of 1967. View of Montreal is very nice http://biosphere.ec.gc.ca/ -Basilica Notre-Dame in Montreal is full of history and it's possible to take a tour or visit on your own. It's in the old Montreal. http://www.patrimo...bndmtl/bndmtle.htm -If weather is really nice, St-Sulpice have cheap beer and the biggest terrace in Montreal (4 or 5 levels of terraces!) 1680 St-Denis Street, downtown -I'm not sure if they started it yet but Jean-Paul Riopelle's sculpture The Joust in front of the Palais des Congrès (convention center) must absolutely be seen at night! There's fire, water, fog on a set timer of about 45 minutes I believe, it's stunning! http://www.qimtl.q...NTS_jpriopelle.php Also nice to know : -FREE WIRELESS INTERNET in over 100 places in Montreal!!! YEAH! http://www.ilesansfil.org/tiki-index.php HAVE FUN!

If you go to the main tourist information center (http://montreal.co...neral.html#Tourist) they have free maps which are pretty good. I barely speak a word of French and neither do some of my friends who live there. You occasionally find someone unable or unwilling to speak English, but there is always someone else around! I would support everyone else's recommendations and add that if you have any particular interested in learning about the general history of the city, the Pointe-à-Callière Museum (http://www.pacmuseum.qc.ca/indexan.html) near the Old Port will totally blow your mind. All of Montreal's museums in general are top notch.

| | | Did someone say "maps"? Let's see... There's the tourist maps of the whole city, the downtown core, and Old Montreal (upside down that last one, strangely enough). You MUST take a walking tour of Old Montreal. If there's one iota of appreciation for architecture and historic buildings in you, you will be amazed. It's the most beautiful and concentrated collection of old buildings in North America. Those three maps make for very handsome souvenirs. You can pick 'em up poster-sized, not folded at any Access Montreal office for $12 a pop. I don't think they're open weekends. You might wanna call first. There's also the bus map, the metro map, the commuter train map, and the underground city map. If you're on a budget, you can pick up a folded version of the bus map for free at any metro ticket kiosk. It's not very detailed though. Ask ticket taker dude for the "plan dew rezo" when he gives you the wrong one. They're not the brightest bunch. If the weather's good, the best places for stunning views of our fair city are from the belvedere of Mount Royal Park and St-Helen's Island in Parc Jean Drapeau. Combined, Mount Royal and the adjacent cemeteries are a massive, beautiful green space right in the heart of the city. You'll need bikes to take it all in. It's that big. cjb's right on the money when he says the best way to get around is on foot, but take the metro at least once, just to say you have. The design of the system and the stations is worthy of a look. Screw Saint Catherine street though. It lost all its utility and charm 20 years ago. Money changers and American chain stores... bah. Good for girl watching, and that's about it. Save your time for the cultural maelstrom that is The Main and the concentrated frenchness of Rue St-Denis. As for museums, two not to miss are the CCA and Pointe-a-Calliere. The current exhibit at the CCA doesn't do much for me, but the building and grounds are worth visiting, just to see how much good design money can buy. If you want to save some time and some money, tell 'em you just want to check out the building and they'll let you in for free. And as for the PaC... oooh la la! Our city's 350th birthday present to itself. The archaeological crypt in the basement is beyond belief. This isn't the touristy shit. It's a real dig, in the very spot where our city was founded. While you're there, grab yourself a coffee at the restaurant and take in the view of the river and the Old Port from the top floor terrasse. It's sweet. Enjoy your stay. Edit: Do ya think I linked enough maps? I could add more, you know. [last edit 4/19/2006 12:53 AM by Emperor Wang - edited 1 times]
