| | | Cool. The thing that really sucks about that story though is that is those people's home. It is a pity the police have to destroy it. Why clean it up? Those people at least have a place to live.

| | | Well, there's the health and safety issue of living in a drain, what if they have kids down there? Also, the city is probably scared that they'll be sued when a flood drowns all the drain bums. There's also related issues of pollution, blocking the drain flow, drug use, etc. They shoulda hidden it a little better I know some spots around here that would make neat homes, you could even generate power from fast-flowing underground rivers! And DuGal is an asshat, I've found like 3 working phones in dumpsters, plus computers, furniture, tools, weapons, etc.

| | | > >thing is, with this much work involved, why not get a job and make money? > We shouldn't hold it against someone if they don't want to join the ratrace. Just about anyone with any hobby or past-time could do away with it and make more money by replacing it with (say) a second job. That doesn't mean they should, or that doing so would really enrich their lives. It's possible (though there's no real way for us to know) the folks in the article may lead a more joyful and fulfilling life than a lot of people who barely scrape by with menial jobs.

I Go Where The Drains Are
| | | Re: elaborate drain dwelling found in california <Reply # 6 on 2/6/2006 6:45 PM >
| | | A drain in Sydney Australia has had a resident for nearly 10 years now. The Rushcutters Bay Drain, with its covered canal design is the nightly shelter for a homeless bloke. He has a few possessions strewn along the canel edges inside the tunnel and sleeps in a nook between two of the huge concrete beams that support the roof. A Samurai Sword was found down there a few years back and its retrieval by explorers from a hiding spot in the drain was one of few times the homeless guy ever paid visitors any attention, pointing out that it was his sword and asking that it be left alone. Its an odd choice for a home given all the abandoned tunnels and drier drains in Sydney. The Rushcutters System is knee deep in tidal water twice a day and the rest of the time its badly affected by illegal sewer overflows owing to the fact the main tunnel is 110 years old. But he still sleeps there every night. S///

| | | Wow. That's quite an elaborate set-up; still though, it makes sense that they were evacuated. Can you imagine the consequences if the drain were to flood and the dam burst? It didn't mention what happened to all their possesions - hopefully they were returned.

Um... this wasn't like the Ninja Turtle den or something. These people were down there shooting smack and going #2 in garbage bags. On top of that, they were messing up city property and, having been a drainer most of my life, know for a fact that they were risking their lives living down there. One good rainstorm would of washed that all away and left them drowned. Not to mention, I imagine the only reason they were there instead of a shelter, is that shelters wouldn't let them do drugs. I've seen some bums resort to camping in a freeway median. Yes, a freeway median, depressed, 36 ft. wide. Not safe...

| | | I just stumbled upon the homeless community in my town the other day while scoping out an older factory building. The building ended up still being in use, but there's much more in the woods behind it. I was gonna be going back there to check it out a little more in depth, but on the way back I realized that I had to walk through a campground of homeless (I counted three tents in a small area, I don't know if there's more). I knew they all set up camp somewhere in my town, but I never knew where they could possibly do it. Anybody think it's wrong to walk in the vicinity of the campground in order to get to the other side? There's no other way around. And it's not like I'll be walking through their campground, just within a couple hundred yards. (Sorry, this wasn't meant to be an ethics question, but thought I'd address it while I was explaining about the campground).

| | | Ha I just came across a similar one near my place. It was in this really weird drain that was (I'm guessing) an over flow re-router(?). It had a mail box, working electric lights and american flags. Not as nice as that one, but still. I've also seen others inside of freeway over passes.

| | | When it comes down to it everybody has right to live and make the best out of their circumstances. Those people were doing the best they could. Crap forbid the sit hits the fan and you find yourself on the street I imagine you'd try the best you could as well. You also would not appreciate the police destroying your home. People have a right to live, and a right to do what they can within reason to survive. With the knowledge we have we know the risks of living in a drain. But those people, it may have been the best they could manage.
