| | | The first shot it clever; unbalanced and clever. The textures and colors are stunning, but I think the presentation takes away from those elements be having the image cut in half with the sky. For me it would be much more powerful in a macro-style close-up of the molding. Keep up with the small aps, though! I'm guessing this is 2.8? The second shot has good color and contrast that is a reminder of a lot of my early work. The problem for that image is purely in the execution, however: the snow in the lower-right kind of smashes the charming shadows. Also it seems like you're trying to establish the pattern of the tree shadows... this kind of falls short with having the whole left half of the image veritably empty of the shape. Number three is interesting. Yeah. Interesting. Most night photographer start out doing ROLLS of these kinds of shots. Abandoned building + Stars + Reflections = Blah. I do these too, but it's not so much as art as documentation. If I could give you a couple tips for these I'd recommend that you overexpose. I know it sounds weird but work with me. Do something different with the concept. The next one is pretty cool. This is one of those shots I'd throw into PS CS2 to do a hue adjustment and get rid of the violet right framing. What I like: light showing through the old lock-hole in the door, texture and color of the door, VERY sharp! What I don't like: violet right frame, unsaturated door needs Levels, boring ceiling in room. 'Consumption' is very, very busy. Consumption - Tree = My fave of your lot. Boring sky... Good, good color, though. 'Taunton' is too centered. Crop the top inch off and it's a winner. -MNG

| | | Don't know why I didn't see this before. THANK YOU for the excellent critique.

Not sure of the exact aperture, but it's around 2.8. Shot with my Canon EF 50mm 1.8II. I agree with you completely as far as a closeup being better. I like this shot, but I'm not totally satisifed. For some reason I was really rushing when I was at the site.

I've gotten similar feedback on this. I actually have some other ones where there is more of a pattern to the shadows. Not sure why I didn't use those. I think I liked the fiery look of the shadow on the left but I should have cropped more if that's what I wanted. This is good feedback.

I agree. I have actually done EXTENSIVE night shooting in my time...rolls and rolls as you say. This one required so much post processing that the quality of the image is just not that great. It was a 5minute exposure and that's as long as my buddy could stand the cold, otherwise I would have tried for like 15 minutes or a half hour.

Of all the shots on my site this is the one shot I've thought about redoing. Everything you say here is totally on point!

Thanks a lot. I liked the framing of this shot, but the color and contrast were garbage. I thought I couldn't even save it, so the fact that you like the color is really great! =)

An inch off both sides or just the right?
Thanks so much, again. This is all extremely valuable. Some of it I knew, some of it I didn't see. For some reason my trip to this location produced a lot of shots with small mistakes that I shouldn't have made. I'm still debating over whether to change photo's I've already put on my site. I should come up with a process of getting critique BEFORE i post them to my site I guess...have to think about that. Thanks again! [last edit 1/13/2006 3:55 PM by desmet - edited 1 times]

| | | Maybe it's my monitor. But the stuff that is really saturated is painful on the eyes. The 3rd one is kind of boring and underexposed. The last two are a bit too busy. The 1st and 4th are nice.

| | | Thanks. Never really worked in color before, so my tendency towards high contrast B&W has translated into painfully saturated color shots. I'll learn eventually. =] Thanks for the input.

All it takes is practice, just like everything else!
Color can be real hard sometimes.

The top... say to just over the lightning-ball on the left point? EDIT: Also, sorry it took me almost a week to get back! I have this post favorited so that I'll be informed of any future changes! [last edit 1/17/2006 11:18 PM by Glass - edited 1 times]

| | | AHA!!!!!!!! There was a color saturation problem with the images on my site (Unlocked being one that was affected heavily by it) and I just discovered that it was due to my dumb ass forgetting to convert to sRGB before uploading the pictures! I knew I had to do it, but I totally forgot. I'm going to go back through and correct everything (ugh...that will take a while). Already corrected Unlocked.
