| | Trouble climbing chainlink fences?? < on 11/19/2004 2:21 AM >
| | | I seen this on the internet a couple months ago and remembered it today when i was walking along a huge fence. Its a piece of metal (rebar would be good for it) shaped like the picture below and inserted in to the fence and used as a ladder on each side. Due to my lack of any artistic skills you will have to use your immagination.

| | | Those are not as fun as they look. They can snap the wire if your not careful. a better trick is to make ones that go over the pipe on the top, and under the wire. It gives you a extra handhold and helps more. PS I tested a wood design and broke the wood, but I broke the wire as well.

| | | Alright you have the fence there. The black line is the thing we designed from wood. Two by fours and some bolts. Unfortunately it was weal. Some rebar would work fine, but a the time I didnt have access. Get the idea. DONT Put it on just the wires.

| | | Also you should make a little thing to prevent it from swinging from side to side.

| | | The 2x4 worked fine so its not large. It could be hard to set in if you make the stabilizer to large. I also had one more idea I never ever did make and wish I had. I may have a welder build a few soon. Know those pesky damn twisted tops that catch clothes and rip pants. Well my friends here is my solution. A little cover to keep your pants from ripping. It will make for faster insert and exit. Also you wont ever need to cut a fence to prevent your tabi boots from getting stabbed through.

Strategic Beer Command where the metal hits the meat.

| | | First barb wire is nothing and scaling a fence in tennis shoes is easy. My boots make fences a bit harder, but the first design works ok and is available in US Cavalry, and not exactly cheap. The time it takes you to install them is more that what it takes you to hop the fence with practice. It does help if carrying a big load, or you could throw it over to your buddy, or pull the fence back and throw it under. If barb wire isn't your thing, a good cheap rug will do the trick also.

| | | Heh, I have ripped many a pant leg on the tops of barbwire fences... why not just go Fight Club style and throw a thick mat over the top? No need to develop an elaborate contraption when a rug works fine.

| | | Im a freak for gadgets Mats work fine, and I have used that. Not on barbed wire because that will go through things. Junkyard your right they arent hard to climb over. However the thing I showed just makes it ten times easier for the novice. Exkalibur is not to much of a fence climber and could greatly profit from the first thing.

| | | Yeah, I dont mind climbing fences but having a step on both sides like that first one would definitely make things easier. I've been looking at trying to find a way to make one myself but i have zero welding skills or access...

| | | I went through a stupid phase where I couldn't climb chainlink because I would actually attempt to balance on the top of the fence while I went over, and thus would end up falling off of it, usually down the side I had come from. Yeah, I'm past that now. It was pretty embarrassing for awhile though.

| | | I dunno, the one time that I really had to get over a chain-link fence quickly I did so with no trouble, but another time when I was climbing over leisurely, I cut my ankle as I stepped over. Go figure. Having a step would be useful, I guess, but unless it was small enough to stow easily in a backpack, it might not be worth the bulk unless you were climbing over tons of fences at a single location. -- Mat

| | | Uhh, didn't we all learn the technique when we were , oh ten or so? Ironically I think I first climbed a fence during a cub scouts meeting. In college, I decided to pass out on the top of some concertina wire, but that's a whole nother chapter.
I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying. |

| | | If you have a shoe with a decently pointy toe, it helps, but Tabi make it effortless. When I want to quietly go over a fence like that, it's so easy to walk up one side, put one foot over to get started on that side, then walk back down without rattling the fence very much at all... If it's fast you want, Tabi will also make it child's play, since you can't put your foot against the fence without getting the toes into the links... even horrible climbers look good climbing with them on...

My feet fit a helluva lot easier into the links when I was ten too... Jester, does it hurt to have just one toe jammed between the links? I've tried climbing a fence barefoot and it didn;t feel too grand...

Nope, not in mine, with a nice insole in them. The difference with and without good insoles is like night and day. I think anyone with Tabi knows what I'm talkin about if they've tried them with and without.
