This huge building was built in the late 1930's to treat people with tuberculosis. When that was no longer needed, people with lung diseases and rheumatism were treated. In the early 1990's the hospital was closed and the building started hosting asylum seekers. In the early 2010's they moved to a nearby closed prison and a plan was to convert the place into housing for the elderly and wealthy.

Nothing happened. The place has been abandoned for around 10 years now and is quite a sad sight nowadays.

When we were leaving and walking down the stairs we suddenly heard some very hasty steps. Several people were running downwards fast without actually caring how much noise they made.

Our friend, who was still outside, sent us a message. They were alarmed that something had happened to us, as they had just seen three huge men wearing gang vests and carrying beer bags run away and escape.

Any idea what's with the "rungs" in photo #2? My first thought was "fire escape" but I've never seen one like that before.

Wonderful photos, very nice. No 6 and 7 struck me for some reason. LOLZ you freaked out the big scary guys and they had to grab their beer and run, too funny!

Me too. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Finland and I just called its current state the biggest crime against architecture in an interview.

I have absolutely no idea. Either a 1930's fire escape or a way for the maintenance guy to reach the roof. The latter is a pretty bad guess, as there certainly is a hatch somewhere.

I think most of the old tb hospitals in Finland still exist. Most of them have even found a new use. This one's a sad exception.
