Twenty-three period photos from the 1960s and a capsule history of the creation and decline of the Distant Early Warning Radar Line. Courtesy of the Canadian Center for Architecture.
And here's an ancient 27-minute documentary film, if you're nerdy about these sorts of things. The logistics of building shit in the middle of ball-freezing nowhere are pretty daunting. Planes, ships, barges, air-drops, road-builders, airstrip-builders, helicopters. Of course when it's that much trouble building something so remote, it doesn't get properly cleaned up when its usefulness runs out.

Getting there would be a kick in the ass... it be fun to splore these. Prolly a lot of intact, cool cold war relics. *uncontrollable drool*
Yeah there are a lot of them still sitting around. But of course they are in areas where flying is your only bet LOL.
I would love to get to some of these sites someday. The journey plus the location would be epic.

These are some of the Holy Grails of cold war sites. Best not to think of them unless you have the ways and means to make the jump Someone need to beat sephdickless there.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

I'd be curious to see how much more intact the DEW sites (or even the Mid-Canada sites) are compared to the Pinetree sites. Only ever been to Ramore on the Pinetree line, and it was fairly gutted in terms of any usable/salvageable equipment left behind.

There is a pinetree site up in the high arctic that is 100% intact. They brought nothing with them when the site was closed. The outbuildings have suffered a bit but in the admin building there are still stacks of dry documents.

WIurbex and I actually explored one of the radar sites on the main continental US a few months back. Unfortunately, the Air Force apparently took all of the radar equipment and sensitive documents when they left, and time took the rest. Still a cool visit though.
"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

hike the rest
it will be epic
I like the way you think. That would be a hell of an adventure.
A couple friends and I visited one of these radar domes last summer. I don't think it qualifies as a "DEW Line" site, since it is a lot farther south, but it was a cool experience regardless.

That's an infiltration wet dream right there .
Ive been thwarted by these DoD type installations, AF and munitions facilities by those good fences I don't climb over barbed wire like I could when I was younger but I can find holes where cows have busted through it or dogs have dug under it
