| | | First off, that sucks for your friend. Second, if there's no evidence (i.e; him standing in the photo INSIDE the location & there's no image manipulation ((PhotoShop)) they can't legally prosecute for trespassing. Third, this is NYC & laws don't apply to the little piggies that call themselves LEO's. Fourth, the NYPD is all about getting money any which way they can & being as lazy as possible while doing it. How do they know he didn't steal the image off a hosting site or a stock photo site? Unless they can trace the image back to his camera or memory card, they have nothing to go on. Christ, I have 4 cops on my FB & they've seen some of what my wife & I put up & they haven't said BOO. None of the GOOD stuff but some of the tamer exploits. That DT has a stick up his a$$ & nothing better to do. I should mention that I have nothing against LEO's in general, but some of them think that since they have a badge they can do whatever the phucuck they want. I've been arrested once & summonsed a few times, all misdemeanors but mainly because I was an easy target & they wanted to fill their quota but in most of the cases, the presiding Judge actually had some gray matter and let me off (gravity knife & over 4", I'm a mechanic & carry a blade 7 days a week, plus I work in a $h!t hole neighborhood)

| | | He was doing Atlas Obscura articles (he also had a yahoo news feature), and the charges were from one of his articles, which probably went into detail about the mansion, what he found inside, etc. It wasn't one image, it was a set. He got stopped on the way out of a similar location once before with no charge, so maybe they googled his name from his ID, found this, and charged him. I did read a news article about a photographer in (I think) Massachusetts who was charged from online pictures, in part because he was in a PCB contamination area which caught the attention of the local government in charge of clean up. As "my friend took the pictures and I profited from it like a douche" is a viable defense, this is weak, but it is NYC, where charges drag on for years and years until people plead guilty out of frustration because they can't miss anymore work to go deal with their misdemeanor pot charge every 3 weeks for 2 years. ( http://www.npr.org...-over-court-delays ) Oh, and NYC is the greatest place on earth!* *if you grew up there and never went somewhere not shitty, crowded, and overpriced Seriously though, NYC is a toilet. It sucks. A lot.

| | | Posted by EsseXploreR Yeah, well let's see how this played out. He went to a location that was low key until it started popping up on Reddit and Instagram. He dropped the name of the location, using his real name, and ran to Atlas Obscura with the photos. The family of the owner, who still visits the mansion all the time because he still lives in town, sees these photos that this guy plastered all over the Internet and gets angry. So now we have these potential charges.
I find it hard to feel bad for the guy. I went to this mansion long before him, as did a handful of other people. Nobody else is looking at charges. Hopefully he learns a lesson from all this.
| He did this to himself. Too much info, ego, too soon. Since the property owner does care, and it's -their- property this could get real sticky. One motion activated cam is all it will take; they're relatively cheap and easy to hide. He also may face something worse, a lawsuit. Sounds like he caused the owner a shit load of trouble. He give directions too along with the GPS coordinates? Fortune doesn't favor the stupid.

| | | Posted by Impfac I think of it as his cost of doing business. He's a professional photographer whom makes his living selling prints and doing articles in addition to covering fashion shows, shooting models, etc. He makes enough to live on the island, so I don't think he's a chump or a fool, although sometimes he does foolish things. So you can mock him if you want, but the guy has talent enough to make a living off of something most of us can only pursue as a hobby. I just feel like the NYPD is being particularly lazy in this case, and I hate their backed up see-you-again-in-a-month-until-you-cry-uncle style of "justice." Plus, after many thousands of explorations, this is his first legal trouble.
| He needs to keep his business conduct legal. Especially if he's successful. If sued during the discovery phase of the lawsuit the lawyers with find it worth their clients while to proceed. A pro should be mindful to stay in the lines. Although this can be hard at times, the decision to post this shoot seems to have been a bad one. If only this had been Seph, everyone be happy

| Yeah, a situation far, far from what I surmised originally. I wouldn't care if it was some inner-city ghetto school, hospital or factory but someone's personal house? What a douche-nozzle.

| To the person who create this post: Your friend published an article (not atlast obscura, i believe dailyuk?) that made tons of people go to this location and destroy it. The explorers who went werent stealth, sometimes parking directly in front of the property on a private course. There had since been several fires at the property since the article was posted, and it has now been boarded up much tighter (even though people still can get in). Said noobs even got busted and arrested at the property! That is the reason why you friend was charged, because its easily apparent that he was inside the property, and I'm pretty sure dropped almost the name and location of the property (if not hints). Mansion sat for years with no issues until this article ended up blowing the spot up for some internet click bait. The art of sitting on your photos is long gone unfortunately...
