It seems to be no wonder that most of the so called "Ghost Towns" once were mining cities or -villages. Nichitsu in the center of Honshū also belongs to this category. Gold had been mined since the 17th century, later zinc and iron. In 1937, the Nichitsu company built a small town near the mine and named it after the company. The mine had been decommissioned in the 70s because of unprofitability. One by one workers families left the town. The last inhabitants left in the mid 90s. The population ist zero since then.
