Vertically, into the Night (Climb Bridges)

At this moment my sister, who has explored with me a number of times before, realized she didn’t care for bridges. I walked cautiously too, we were 150 feet above the river and early morning dew covered the top of the bridge.

It was the annual family vacation, and ever since learning where we’d vacation this year, I’d been eager to climb some bridges. We’ve got a shortage of those here in western NC.

A few nights before, I’d climbed this bridge with my brother. My sister and I went back to it, because I hadn’t gotten onto the south tower the first time. Getting to the tower was a challenge – the most challenging mid-air bridge scramble I’ve yet done.

Exploring with siblings is the best.

On the first climbing night, after the blue bridge, my brother and I decided to try the bascule bridge. We walked along the railroad tracks across the river. Once near the lift, we could confirm that one set of tracks was active – the lights were on in the shacks. We crept up the stairs and could see that someone was inside the lower shack. We went back to the tracks and as we debated slipping past the two shacks or climbing up another way, I noticed motion. Massive motion. The counterweights were moving. So we called it a night.

And that was my vacation. Thanks for looking.

Nice! I've been over the first bridge a billion times but have never thought about climbing it.

Climbing is fun, and there are so many bridges in this city. You're in a great spot if it's something you're interested in. This particular bridge was rewarding even though we didn't make it out to the taller middle section.

Thanks so much, Once-ler! Reflections are one of my favorite part of shots like this. I had some technical struggles with this set, so I'm especially glad to hear that you liked them.

Hey thanks. The nearest bridge is two hours from Asheville and I haven't done it yet. Let's meet up.

Thank you for being brave (or downright insane) enough to get such beautiful pictures, so that the rest of us can admire yours instead of trying to get our own. That's just an amazing set!

It doesn't require as much bravery/insanity as I used to assume

Regardless, you couldnt catch me more than 3 stories high without an entire floor of steel or concrete beneath me.
