This forge was established in the 1800's and built/repaired equipment used during the California Gold Rush.

The owner developed a special cast iron water turbine (that would later be copied) to generate power to his shop. He also designed and patented many other machines used here.

When he died in the early 1900's he left his forge to his employees. They ran it for another 50 years until the last employee died.
After changing hands a few more times the shop was finally bought by the city in 2007.

There has been talk of turning it into an exhibit/skill workshop and to use the forge to build/replace lamp posts and other ornamental iron pieces in the region but between costs of restoration/hazardous material clean-up etc. (which was supposed to be completed in 2010) it hasn't happened.

This is the only water-powered forge/shop left in the United States.

It has been named one of America's Most Endangered Places by the Smithsonian Institution.

Cool.
Reminds me of the Phillips Brothers steam powered box factory, which is still active.

Whoa, great place and relatively rare find in California. Thanks for showing this piece of history. Were you given permission for this spot?

LOL Calvin! I was an 80's kid, loved Knight Rider!

Maybe I can bribe you with some egg McMuffins?

You never have to bribe me Siper, but DAMN you know my weaknesses!

Thanks for the compliments everyone! (I do enjoy rocking cr400's world every now and then, and thanks for that link Enigma, my silly phone wont play it right now but I will check it later)

No, we weren't given permission. We were in the area checking out something else and someone from town told us about this spot. For being historic and endangered it's sort of just..well, ABANDONED haha.
A little creative slinking around under/around rusty sheet metal in certain areas

On a different note....we were very excited about the metal "rock" siding in pic #9. The same stuff as seen in our "talking mule" thread.
Never thought I'd be excited over siding

From the metal rock siding to the elaborate doorknob, the "Office & Bar" seems to be out of place, but very neat.

You never have to bribe me Siper, but DAMN you know my weaknesses!

Ha! Now I know how to bribe you when I visit NorCal!

Great set. Number 18 is hilarious.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh no! You guys found my favorite secret spot!

Ah well. Guess I don't need to make another state of the union writeup.

Good job finding it! I had to search through historical mechanical engineering documents .

Clostridium! (and I had to scroll down 3 times to spell that name right)
I wonder if you went before or after us. Did you get into the office/bar (your pic 3?) We did not. I was dying trying to see all those ledgers and couldn't tell if they were old or recent.
Glad you found this place on your own even being new and all!
You are welcome to join us anytime, same to you partime wanderer....cuz I would love to see your snow sheds/tunnels as well

As for you Austtie, I will allow you to bribe me with McDonald's breakfast items
cuz you're from Socal and possibly a Dodger's fan

This place was an unexpected find, sometimes those are the most fun!

Unfortunately no. It was shot through the window. The neighbor watering his yard didn't know how to access it and was looking at me suspiciously so I could only try accessing spots outside his watch.
