"I wonder what's in here?" -- my last words.

| | | Posted by Ben KG Hey guys! I'm new here (hence the introduction on this thread). Living in the North Kentucky region, looking to get into urban exploring. I'm a preacher by profession, and whenever I do some [deeply amateurish] UE, it is a tremendous stress reliever. Got any tips or suggestions? How can I get more into/out of this? How can I meet up with people? (I'm sure there's a post about this, but I haven't found it yet). I really want some more experienced urban explorers to mentor me and show me the loop. Cheers!
| Holy Hanna, a fellow NKY'r! Welcome, sir! Best advice I can give has probably been said a thousand times... there's a lot of good information on gear, safety, etc, all over this forum. If you're looking for locations, like Therrin said, just bugging people for information will not make you any friends. Get to know people, participate, basically let us know that you're who you say you are. Don't ask me for tips on this one, because I'm still figuring it out myself. In the meantime, Google is your friend, especially Google Maps. There are abandonments and interesting sights all over NKY and Cincinnati; start with your neighborhood and pan out. As for meeting with other people, well, the same advice. Get to know people, and check out the Events section: http://www.uer.ca/events/ Good luck, sir! Or Mam, it's hard to tell on the internet. :p

| | | Hi, I live in Riga, Latvia, but am currently visiting Anchorage, Alaska, and will also be going to Chicago for a few days before heading home. I am not new to UE, but I usually avoid exciting adventures - I am mostly in it for the calm mood of solitary places, ghosts of people and things long elsewhere and the excellent photo opportunities. Found this forum while searching online for some locations to visit while I'm away from my usual hunting grounds. Tourism, you see. Part of the reason why I'm posting is to ask -what is the reason behind not letting a new user post for three days? Am I supposed to read the entire publically available forum before posting? That wouldn't take three days anyway. edit: Nevermind, found the answer in one of the twenty faq's floating around. Not that it's any less unpleasant now that I know it's not just a silly mistake. Time constraints and things.

| | | So I'm kinda new. I made an account three years ago when I started exploring with friends in the east coast of the US. We did a good mix of drains, tunnels, abandoned buildings, and not-so-abandoned buildings. Rooftops and steam tunnels were my favorites. So now I'm on the west coast, bay area (california, usa). Feel free to message me if you're nearby. I'm trying to meet new people out here. Doubly so new fellow explorers. Having a go at being active on these forums should help. I'm also very interested in photography, though I'm not that great at it. I'm learning, and trying to get better. I'm particularly interested in computational photography, but you don't see a lot of that here. Ping me if you want to chat

I was curious about this as well, and it seems the guy actually wrote a 300+ page Ph.D thesis on urban exploration and the people who do it. His Ph.D is in cultural geography so that makes a lot of sense. I haven't been able to find the full PDF online yet (it's on Scribd but you have to buy it or something), but it's called "Place Hacking: Tales of Urban Exploration" and I think he is an explorer himself from what I gathered.
| That does nothing to impress me on gender statistics though. As I previously mentioned, even if gender is taken via what is listed on web boards and forums, a goodly amount of that is likely skewed (the way it is on here). Further, no one I know has ever mentioned being contacted by anyone doing a paper on such, who was interested in obtaining gender statistics. Soooo, one would imagine that it's yes, mostly guys; but in reality who really knows how many females??? 85% sounds like a good number, off the top of my head, I think I'll write that!!
