| | | Based on how much of a complicated maze this place is, I only managed to nab three photos...the right amount for a critique post. But I haven't explored in ages and have lately really fallen out of photography. I was nowhere near on the ball. That's my concern. I'm not happy with these shots even compared to how I was doing last month...so now seems to be a great time for it. C&C plz!

| | | #1 needs some HDR!! LOL I like the composition and exposure in both #2 & 3. Those are great shots.

| | | concept in 1 is a bit amateurish... nothing wrong with it, but with the blowouts in the window and such it just doesn't seem to have much composition. 2 is nice, the lighting/exposure is great. On the aesthetics side the whole bottom left feels a bit heavy compared to the top. Perhaps a little crop could fix it? and the crack in it is just awesome, good use of emphasis and movement. Exposure on the third one is just lovely. Really interesting, has that homey feel to it with the brick wall. I'd say that one is great enough for me to put on my kitchen wall. Fun stuff, happy explores brother.

| | | Thanks! I guess my main question is...what went wrong with 1? I'm in love with the bright exposure, the blowout was intentionally exacerbated. But the composition is crap. And the floor is horrendously out of focus. [last edit 11/16/2012 4:38 AM by Weirdlig - edited 1 times]

I think a tighter composition would be better. The OOF areas are not pleasing either. I would suggest either a more shallow DOF to get them even more out of focus or just open the aperture so it is all in focus.

just from my preference it is shot too low/looking up and is very heavy on the ceiling. I don't mind the blowouts from the windows.

Agreed. Also, I feel as if it's not you/ the shot you are taking that's not perfect, but the room just doesn't have much to look at. EDIT: Although I'll admit, the clock on the wall is pretty cool. Maybe a shot more focused on that? [last edit 11/16/2012 4:06 PM by bornmilitia - edited 1 times]

| | | I'm embarrassed to admit it. But honestly I was too nervous to stand up in that room with the cars parked outside the windows. I guess sometimes I get caught up in that. Just because I had to lay low doesn't mean there wasn't a better way I could have shot it while down there. Sigh. I guess I'm still kind of shooting those 'this is where I was, look at the room' documenting shots sometimes. Like exploring was to everyone at first. That's getting old.

I know what you mean as far as that process going through your head. Sometimes there are shots that I try to capture that reflect the exact scene as I saw it - not a more aesthetically pleasing take on the subject. Unfortunately documentary photography can be a little more bland. Nothing wrong with it though, perhaps make a whole series of shots that all reflect that technique. And in all honesty with the story that you had behind your visit to this place, I already give you a lot of credit for even making it in there, nonetheless managing to shoot a couple photos of it.

Funny... sometimes I think I'm out of that 'phase' and then bam! an entire shoot of 'hey, I was here and this is the room I was in'. LOL

| | | In all of them (but especially the last 2)I'd like to see more...I'm not a big fan of the subject being cut into by the frame. The first one is the best IMO.
