| | Abandoned middle school in Hominy, OK < on 7/6/2011 9:54 PM >
| | | I've been busy lately with a new job and working on an a 100+ year old house that was an abandoned property and probably qualifies for a photo shoot itself. Thought I would sneak one in while I had the chance. This is the old Carver segregated school in Hominy, OK. Built in 1935/36, the school was a WPA project built for the black community. With the end of segregation, the school was used as a middle school until it was closed in 1979, along with the old high school, when a new school was completed. The building was used for various other activities, including a head start, until it was finally abandoned about 10 years ago.
You can still see the old Carver logo under the middle school moniker.
The school was constructed of buff brick with concrete accents. The layout was a cafeteria/auditorium to the left, school rooms in the center, and a gymnasium/stage on the right.
The gymnasium. I had to resort to a flash in some areas as it was quite dark.
Looks like someone tried to set the building on fire. This was one of three places that had some slight fire damage.
The locker rooms/rest rooms.
The main hallway and class rooms.
The trophy cabinet and more fire damage.
The cafeteria/auditorium. The room had endured some modernization.
The town of Hominy still has most of it's old schools still standing, though this one is the only one that has been abandoned. I've heard that the building is out for bids for demolition. So far, I haven't been able to locate any historical photos of the school, though surely some exist. No doubt the old building is in its final days.
Ruins, the fate of all cities. |

| | | the design similarities between OK and TX schools built in that time frame is understandable given their geographic proximity but it always amazes me when i see a small detail in some of your photographs that i see in all the schools down here. case in point the paper towel dispenser in the bathroom. every school i have been in down here has the exact same ones (if any at all). what i think i love most are the color palettes chosen for the interiors. one of your recent posts had me doing a double take - fully thought it was one of the ones i shoot at down here. exact same colors exact amount of decay etc etc... as always - love your photographs and posts! glad you were able to get out and shoot a little recently! the south forum has been super slow lately. effing heat! still planning a trip up there next weekend but it could fall apart on me. ill email you and let you know - [last edit 7/6/2011 11:45 PM by insulinguy - edited 1 times]

A lot of towns photograph every building for various reasons, check the local historical society with a good story
