| | Draining near LSU (Baton Rouge, La) < on 7/4/2011 10:57 PM >
| | | Okay so I've done some more exploring since the Huey P Long pool area in LSU's campus (thread found here: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=92947 ) I've been exploring buildings and things for years (even though I just found this site recently) but draining is new to me. So the other day I set out exploring some drains around the LSU area. If you've ever heard of/been to the really large Carlotta Street block party held every year in Baton Rouge around Halloween then you know about the State Street/Carlotta Street area near the North Gates of LSU. It's a very unique place but it's filled with sketchy (albeit interesting) people. SO... I found some drains around that area and decided to explore them. The first set was filled with high mud/water and led nowhere...but the second set led under a bridge and then provided 3 tunnel choices. I did all three and eventually they all led to a big main drain area which was too deep with water and muck for my rain boots...I really want to go back to see if the water level goes down because that main room was interesting and obviously led to more places. Anyways the interesting thing is that all the graffiti in the drains had people's names and addresses around the Carlotta Street area...this makes me think it's some kind of inside initiation thing for folks in that neighborhood. So here are the pics: 1.) The entrance (this is not giving away the POE...) where you choose between 3 tunnels- my lens doesn't get wide enough to show all three.
2.) I choose the dirtier one, of course!
3.) The graffiti is mostly addresses.
4.) Ivanhoe (Street)
5.) Much further down in the tunnel
6.) Into the main drain room where I stopped
7.)
8.) A side tunnel it appeared not too many people have been in
My conclusions: -Draining is fun and tunnels are everywhere! -I need a tripod badly -You can never have enough flashlights That's all for today folks! I also went to an awesome steel foundry with my friend (whose name on here is Kodiak Jack) in Plaquemine, Louisiana. That trip was much more interesting than this and I'll post the pics/details about that shortly.

| | | Stick with it man, there are definitely plenty of tunnels everywhere. If you want some help finding some in your area, or general tips and whatnot, send me a PM. Invest in headlamps, flashlights are a pain in the ass for general light, a headlamp you don't have to hold. Handheld torches for me are more for lighting a room for pictures and whatnot. A tripod is a must if you plan on getting decent pics in there. Does your camera have the ability to do long exposures? Maybe a mode that is for night, or fireworks? I can't comment on the pictures, I didn't look at them, no offense, I just can't stand the pop up shots. When you use the uploader, next time uncheck the box that says create pop up or whatever. Better yet, hotlink them from flickr of photobucket or something. You will definitely get more views that way. There's a huge community of drainers here on UER, and we are for the most part a very supportive community, so never be afraid to ask for help when it comes to drains. Don't yell out for locations though, that'll just make you look bad. Sorry for rambling, I've been drinking.

-I have a headlamp! It just got dropped in some goo and the batteries fell out while I was a loooong way in the dark and I'm glad I had a flashlight to use until I got the headlamp right. -I have a DSLR so I can do long exposures and stuff. I just need to get a tripod -Sorry the uploading thing annoys you! I'm still new to this. -Thank you for the response and there is no need to apologize for drinking!

I did go back and look at the pics, not bad. A tripod will definitely make all the difference. Check out these headlamps, I get them from ebay for dirt cheap, and they are bright as fuck. Usually they are only 99 cents plus like 8 bucks for shipping or something. Can't beat em for the money. Some of the models zoom as well. http://cgi.ebay.co...61#ht_2023wt_856
Also, you can never have enough extra batteries. Snap on glow sticks are also great for emergency lighting.

| | | I agree with KJ on the headlamp thing, it's a definite must. Also a tripod is a definite must. Once you get a tripod, use your timer or remote on the camera, so that you can put yourself in the pic to add perspective. Plus you can do some pretty sweet shit with light painting and long exposure shots. Anyway good luck, it's addictive. Drain on!!!

On a side note, the flash on the camera is the devil! Long exposure with lots of head lamps, glow sticks, and other lights is the way to go.

That sounds like some good solid advice there. Thanks! I know all my current photography has been wanting because of lack of a tripod
