| | | Sorry if this is too long for one post... I didn't know whether to make it one big post or several smaller threads and I tried asking in chat and got flamed by drunks So I figured one big thread. Spent all day yesterday exploring in my hometown, found some pretty cool stuff. First off, an abandoned grocery store. I know the photos are poor quality, I broke my nice camera and all I had to work with was a crappy point n shoot...
Abandoned Grocery Store
This place really tugs at my heartstrings. The entire time I grew up we'd go here for groceries, then during high school I worked there, and then it closed down when I was 20 after a Kroger's opened up just down the road. It was very difficult to get into, high visibility + some sort of alarm system, but I don't know if it's active. Very, very cool inside though.
They did a pretty nice job of up & leave when they closed too.
All the basics of a grocery store are still there, even the cash registers.
Even old advertisements
In some places there was even stock left on the shelves!
The alarm thing, I'm guessing. This wasn't here until it closed down.
Behind the store. The vents smelled utterly putrid, I bet they left stock in the meat freezer or something.
Someone tried pretty hard to kick this door in.
This was the only noteworthy graffiti
I'd say this place is worth the trip but definitely be careful. Next up, driving around the outskirts of town, I spotted a wicked cool looking abandoned house, parked the truck and hiked back to it. Mayhill House #1
Gated Entrance
Shed right next to it, wide open
Front door, wide open
Side windows
The one interior shot I got. I decided not to go in as I was alone and there was tons of evidence of a very recent bum camp (clothes, shoes, smell of food cooking, the guy sitting the the living room who wouldn't let me take his picture but said I could photograph outside if I gave him a cig)
Cool old axle
And combine
And yours truly.
About a half mile down the same road as the first Mayhill house, I found a second house, right on the side of the road in the property of a very mom and pop type auto mechanic shop. They were sitting on the front porch of the shop so I just walked up with my tripod and camera and asked if I could take some pictures of the house, and they were more than happy to let me and even showed me the abandoned barn to go with it. They're some of the friendliest folks I know. So PLEASE, let's keep it that way, if you want to visit this house go for it, it's pretty cool, but do the community a favor and ask the owners if you can take some pictures of it! They won't say no and they WILL spot you if you don't ask. Anyway, here's the set:
The house
Side view
Living room
The entire place was filled with rabbit shit
50's? Caddilac?
Utility room
Burned out Piano
Over the years, instead of just taking down the wallpaper, they would just re-plaster it and put up more. Weird. You can see 4 layers here.
Obligatory
These coat hangers are so old and rusty if you pick one up it crumbles in your hand. I'm guessing 40's
melted tape deck
Melted ceiling fan
"You can't argue with a sick mind." Creepy.
The barn
Old tires and a lawnmower?
Tons of cool old glass bottles in the shed
Isn't this thing worth some money?
The clean side
The rest of the barn is filled with tons of awesome bric-a-brac from the 30's and 40's
I dunno what the hell this is
That's it! Enjoy! I've reconed acouple more places here in Denton and hopefulyl soon I'll get to explore them and post a report!

| | | yes, its a gas cap or gas cap cover.
When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store. |

They went bankrupt and got in some major trouble with the IRS, and the bank up and shut them down. I remember going in for a 6 pack one day and the next day I went back for some smokes and it was padlocked shut with a handwritten note saying "IRS made us close. Be back never."

| | | The last photo in the set is a pressure cooker. Refrigeration wasn't widely available to farmers, so most families would can most of their stock.
I'm perfectly fine, just as this bulb doesn't BZZT! |

| | | If that's the PW I think it is, I used to live practically directly across the street from it. I also had trouble sleeping for all of the sirens... if it IS the one I'm thinking of, there are, or were, tons of abandoned farm houses and barns right in that area and the people who own the land were, like the 'mom and pop', always great about letting shutterbugs roam around and look at them. I think a weekend trip to Denton is in order soon...

This one is near Avondale Park by TWU. The one you are thinking of is now an alternative school and the area is pretty developed now, I fondly remember some of the houses.

| | | There is a house just north of Denton, right on I-35 that is practically covered with trees. It's beautifully decrepit. The reason I'm posting such a description of the location is to warn y'all that someone actually DOES live there. I stopped in front of the house a few months ago and was going to snap pictures of the outside. This sweet little old lady came out of the front door just before I took my first pic. She'd seen my car stop and thought I was the mail carrier. Wish I'd had the nerve to go ahead and ask her if I could take pics, but I was kind of embarrassed, so I just apologized and left. Anyway, just a heads up...NOT abandoned!

Yeah, I saw that too, I almost got a stiffie at the prospect of exploring it, but when I crept by some old lady in a Thunderbird or Buick, can't remember was near the mailbox and drove off... I'm glad you said something, I figured she was just checking it out and was planning to go back!
