| | Montague County and Surrounding Areas... < on 6/3/2010 2:43 AM >
| | | Hi everybody. I have been exploring old buildings for years (especially in college in Chattanooga, TN) but I had no idea that anyone else was into that sort of thing until I watched the documentary "Urban Explorers: Into the Darkness" last week. Then I found this community and I can't stop reading everyone's stuff. I want more. Problem is I don't have time to go out to Dallas or even Wichita Falls without planning a day off work and finding a sitter etc. So my question is this, does anyone know of anything interesting around Montague County, TX or the surrounding areas? I have already explored all the old buildings in downtown Bowie. I fear I may just be too rural for Urban Exploration. Lol. But I am going to try to make it to a Dallas meet and greet sometime in the near future. Thanks, FiG.

| | | Don't sell yourself short, just for being out in the sticks. Old farmhouses are pretty awesome, especially if you get into light-painting like Imbroglio does. An abandonment doesn't have to be factory-sized to be worth exploring.

Oh I'm not selling myself short, I was just conveying that there doesn't seem to be much out here. But I have poked around some of the old homesteads (most have been turned into dump grounds though).

| | | Old homesteads are one of my favorite things to go explore. There is a much different feel there since the items left behind are more personal in nature.

| | | We had a lake house out on Amon Carter for several years and the thing I wanted to explore most was the upper floor of the old hardware store. I hear they have all kinds of stuff from when they first opened. The old Butterfield Stage line went through that area and there's supposedly some cool places to check out along it. You might ask some of the old locals. They were really friendly to us and had some great history they were willing to share. We talked to some at the Monday sale. Do they still have Trade Fair on the radio? That was my favorite thing on Sundays.
I'm a blatant waste of time and resources. |

| | | Theres actually some remains of the old Butterfield stage road that can be seen west of Forestburg like straight tree lined lanes, stone bridges at creek crossings and an old stone well in the vanished town of Audabon I could find it again, not sure I could tell you how but its worth the half an hour hike just to imagine what it was like back then

The hardware store would be cool, if it weren't locked up like Fort Knox and right across the street from the police station. And yes trade fair is on everyday now. I listen to it at work.

I am willing, a half hour hike is just a stroll to me.
