| | Old Nike Missile site in Alvarado, TX < on 9/11/2009 11:00 PM >
| | | While out riding the motorcycle the other weekend, I stumbled upon something interesting -- an old Nike Missile site. I had no idea what I had found at the time, but I knew something good was just over the fence. Just beyond the guard shack, I could see some kind of platform. I didn't know what it was, but I knew it was definitely out of place among the bare fields all around me. When I got back home, I looked it up on google earth and I immediately recognized what I had seen. I'm kind of a Cold War history buff so I'm somewhat familiar with the Nike Program. I guess I had forgotten that there was a site in Alvarado. The site consists of two parts: a radar/control facility and a launch complex. Both are spread apart by a half mile or so. I couldn't attach the .kmz link, so get on google earth and do a search for "nike pkwy, alvarado, tx" and you'll see the launch facility to the south, and the radar/control facility to the north. I didn't even see the launch facility when I was out riding. I might make another trip out this weekend to see what it looks like. Not sure what potential this site has for UE. The control facility looks maintained, but I didn't see any activity. Not sure about the launch facility. One thing is for sure though. This far out, people shoot first and ask questions later. fyi, there are several other Nike sites around DFW: Denton, Terrell, Ft. Wolters and Alvarado. Duncanville hosted the area's command/control site, but has no missiles located there.

| | | Looks interesting, the only nike base I've investigated in D/FW is the one in Denton, and someone is living in the Radar/Base and the launch site is locked up tight with a cell antenna and some UNT facility in the property. Looks like the launch site on google maps/street view in Alvarado is occupied by someone.

| | | The Alvarado site(s) was known as DF-50. Both IFC & Launch Battery are apparently privately owned. I have an email address for the IFC site owner, if you want to try contacting him, explain your interest, & ask for permission to visit & document it. No one whose opinion matters will think you're less of a man if you got permission to UE a site.

| | | Is that the one you took me to 2X? The one now owned by Mormons or whatever?
I'm a blatant waste of time and resources. |

Mormons? Hardly. I think theyre 7 Day Adventurists or the Arthur Murray Learn to Dance in 7 days ensemble or something.

| | | About the control complex, I think Barry may be right. I have a book on the subject which lists the control complex as being owned by "New Life Ministries". The launch complex is supposedly in the hands of a "private owner." This control complex originally had 4 radars: Target Tracking Radar (TTR), Missile Tracking Radar (MTR), Acquisition Radar (ACQR), and the high power acquisition radar (HIPAR). The big platform I saw was for one of these, but sadly, no radars are still there. Site was active from 9/60-10/68. The launch complex has three magazines with a total of 18 Nike-Hercules missiles. The Hercules was about 40' long, 3' wide, could be equipped with a high explosive or nuclear warhead, used solid propellant to reach speeds of 3.65 mach and 100kft altitude/96 mile range. I probably won't go to the trouble of trying to get a legit tour. I was just posting this to the group to see if anyone knew about it. As for me, I'm a dude, 34, Cedar Hill, Tx. So, what's the asterisk all about anyway?

| | | dont worry about the asterisk nobody is really worried about that or keeping score except those that only explore with pre-mission and think this is some sort of competition where everyone has to be equal like soccer (and we know they dont use roids) just sayin and yeah Barrys right it is teh Mormons they keep the white salamander in magazine 3 [last edit 9/12/2009 3:02 PM by Explorer Zero - edited 1 times]

| | | stopped by on my way back from Austin this morning the control site is obviously being lived in by somebody so I didn't even try getting in there. right after I pulled in the driveway of the launch site the owner showed up in his truck. luckily I was still in my car so I was able to say I was just turning around.
