World Trip 2002 - Cincinnati

Station three of the disused Cincinnati Subway was by far the most interesting. It also looked to be the most finished of the abandoned stations. It had some furniture in place, a booth of some sort on the platform, a waiting area painted green, passages to the exits and of course the 'bomb shelter'. The area was really quite interesting to explore. It was fitted out with electrical cables, switches and power points. I tried a few switches but none of them worked. I had the feeling though that if you could find the master switch you could power up this long abandoned Cincinnati Subway station. The bunker section was a bit of a laugh. Bunk beds with no mattresses, in a small room that would be difficult to seal off from the rest of the tunnel. But it would be a cool place to film a creepy movie or play hide and seek. Fences along the edge of the platform spoke of the hazard of falling off for the bunker residents.

Approaching the third station.

At the third disused Cincinnati Subway station. Graf says "The world is ending! Please sign in"

Ticket booth? As you can see this was the only of the four stations on the disused Cincinnati Subway that had any real fitting out. The door on right leads to a surface stairway.

Close up of the booth. I think this was the

Interior of the booth

The exit to the surface has a electrical control panel and fire hose.

Exit stairs

Passage ways, hidden tunnels.

More passage ways.

Waiting room and graffiti.

We were not the first explorers here. The Urban Spelunking club chapter 642 had visited before I was even heavily involved in Urban Spelunking myself.

Beds in the 'bunker' section of the station. It was woefully inadequate for the number of people it was supposed to be capable of housing.

More of the bunker room and some modern graffiti.

That booth again. I don't imagine they would be selling many tickets from an abandoned station on an abandoned underground railway. Of course, it's not really abandoned, just waiting for the day trains will finally run down these tunnels.

Lighting provided on the bunker section.

Walking past the bunker section of the tunnel. Note the furniture and wire fence designed to stop bunker residents from falling onto the tracks.

Survival supplies. Some one has since updated them with a modern beverage.

Funny graffiti. A stick man stands in an alcove.

Toasting the light from a vent.

Another survival supplies container way down the tunnel at the curve.

On to station 4

I was shown the subway by Jake. You can read more about this subway on his web site, this site and here.
