The End is at Hand

Last week I visited Tahawus for probably the last time...at least the last time with buildings remaining. I drove up to the office...on the way down the hill I spotted the stack of the Sinter Plant and thought maby it was still standing. I was wrong! All that was left of it was the stack and a small portion of the massive conveyor. I got to the office and tracked down "Buffaloman" Steve and we spent a long while chatting. He and I first met about a year before, and had talked many times on the telephone. Months ago plans were being finalized for the demolition then they were put on hold. A change in NL executive staffing a few days later brought the plans into full swing and the demolition was started in April. Estimated cost is $4 million. Thankfully I was able to work somewhat with Ginny and the Newcomb Historical Society to salvage a few items. They did'nt take much, though, and it makes me sick to think of how much is presently being destroyed. Would you believe the steel is being sent to Japan? Ha! Tahawus may soon be converted into Toyotas! The hazardous waste (tons of transite and other materials) are being moved to "storage" in a dump not too far away. The material would have been safer if it had not been touched! A state environmental rep. is on site and constantly analyzing materials for toxicity. Gordon, the other but more senior caretaker was not there, I had really wanted to spend some time with him as he is in poor health. Security measures have been stepped up significantly, and State Police have become closely involved, so seriously, carefully consider any visitation plans. A lot of Adirondack history will soon be lost forever!
