 Overview
 Description
Located in the middle of the 6million acres, it's weird to see this industrial monster come out of all that gree. This facility is, literally, in the middle of nowhere. 8 miles from the nearest highway, 20+ miles from the nearest town, this is truly god's country. Exploring this site is an all-day affair. My friend and i were videotaping the mine back in February, and there wasn't enough daylight to do it all!!!! The best part of Tahawus is the lack of vandalism. It's too far out to really frequent and most people don't linger long.
The best time to explore this is in mid-fall or late spring. No black flies!

 Basic Information
Type: Buildings- Ore Processing Plant / Mine
Status: Demolished
Accessibility: Moderate: The land bridge over the Hudson are watched if the logging company is there; and NL has moved the No Tresspass signs up to the first pit. They are getting serious, after realizing the place is gaining some exposure.
Recommendation: worth the trip

  •  Interesting Features
The Town of Newcomb is piecing together a large collection of historical memorabilia that was salvaged recently. Some public access to the collection may be available in the fall at "Teddy Roosevelt Days." Until recently, many parts of this place looked like everyone just finished work one day and never came back... many buildings were built to a huge scale.

     History
As far as I can tell, the MacIntyre Mine started out mining iron ore, but was a failure due to an impurity that was causing problems during smelting. This was later found to be titanium. During WWII, the US Government purchased a 100yr easement through the Adirondack Park as titanium is a strategic metal. This mine/plant operated up until 1984 and was abandoned. On the site, there are a series of garages. It is wise to stay out of those because there is a local heavy equipment contractor that operates his logging trucks out of there. Be respectful... Some of the people I ran into told us a bit of the history of the place.

     Future Plans
I thought that it would just rust away into the landscape, but it doesn't look like that's the case. The demolition of the facility is well under way, with the Sinter Plant already gone and singificant progress having been made on the main plant. Tahawus is on borrowed time. Be careful as security measures have increased.
