I'm 5'10" 150lbs, and I think they look skinny. Yes, I understand they aren't near what us fat americans are, but that still looks malnurashed

You're in the middle of the "normal" range of BMI, iamstu. You're still more than 20lbs from underweight.

Artists in different cultures tend to portray the human form in various ways that don't necessarily reflect anatomically correct proportions. These just seem to be done in a kind of folk style. The folk art of many African cultures use human forms like that with the long, thin legs and arms, thicker waists, and oval (almost egg-shaped) heads. I'm sure the artist was merely following those stylistic conventions without any intention of purposely leading the viewer into thinking that the people pictured were anything less than healthy and normal.
