You are quite lucky you didnt get fried in there. The amount of power in these vaults can actually arc to your body from th ebus bars. Carry an inductance voltage meter or just stay out of Electrical vaults if they are powered. Most power co. Personel dont even enter them unless the power is cut.

I was in the doorway. These were maybe 15 feet from me, hence the blury picture with no tripod

Im surprised the padlock was off. I gave the best explanation i could in the next photo. I see two 3 phase banks of transformers in this vault. The red bar on the right side of each transformer connects to the front BUSS BAR = your NEUTRAL connection which is grounded. The bar on the left side of each transformer is a phase [live] A,B,C. The buss bars are on the SECONDARY low voltage side of the transformers .Il bet the secondary is 120/208 3 phase 4 wire wye. The big cables coming off the ends of the buss bars are your SECONDARY LOW VOLTAGE CABLES GOING DIRECTLY TO THE LOW VOLTAGE SWITCH GEAR [two transformer banks = 2 switch grears] From the look of those cables 500 mcm [best geuss] would = a 1,200 amp capacity & a 1,200 switch gear for each bank. Now a days they would put two green PAD MOUNT transformers OUTSIDE of building with conduits going right to the switch gear [modern installation ]
