CJB, you,re right. It's turning or we're both crazy!

i know it used too... but maze is right we must be crazy cuz it's turning!!!

When the bridge was disused, they left it in that position. It's only when the canal was opened for navigation in 2002 that the bridge was fixed in the position it is today.

So Blawkowski, you're saying that this pic is actually an old one (prior to 2002) cause the bridge is now perpendicular to the canal so boats can pass through... I know they re-opened the Canal but I did'nt thought they re-opened it that far (I thought the first set of navigational locks was re-opened but not the locks this far in the Canal...)

ahhh it all makes sense now!!!

I wonder how they managed to turn this old rusted piece of steel in 2002
Posted by cjb 4/8/2004 3:53 PM | remove
actually Blawkowski I dont agree , As far as I can remember this bridge has been in the position it is today. this pic must be much more older than 2002,probably early 1990s.
Posted by maZe 4/8/2004 6:44 PM | remove
Even if they turned that big rusty piece in the 90's I'm quite amazed at how they did this... Anyone know? anybody that was acutally there when they turned it? It must have been quite a sight! (and some super rusty sounds too!)
Posted by cjb 4/8/2004 7:43 PM | remove
I guess they used some kind of powerful trucks attached to both side of the bridge with strong steel cables and pulled... must have been quite a cacophony!
Posted by SPEK Photo 4/9/2004 2:10 AM | remove
The big shaft in the middle of the bridge with the rollers are somwhat protectected from the elements, plus they were probably caked in old grease, As CJB suggested, they probably used winch pulling from from both end of the bridge.

It could be worth to check out media archives... I'm sure some photographer must have been there to take a few pics...

they moved it in the 1999 2000 time frame, i crossed it once prior to that

Actually some of the old bridges on the Lachine canal were so well engineered and balanced they could be cranked by hand to turn them if no power was available! The mechanism probably worked as good as new.

the old cn bridge next to coleco was turned before it was cut up. and it turned easily for the first time in years, the canal was gradually closed in phases from east to west. with the increase on traffic on lafleur the bridges were twinned at the same time as the seaways was built. the east one is the newer one,

assuming the Bridge is on a centre force like railroad turntables this bridge can be easily turned by one person!

Yes, Nostra, couldnt have been moved to this position before 98 as I recall.

Blawkowski is right about it being turned in 2002 because I walked across that bridge hundreds (not exagurating) of times from the time I moved to point st charles untill the time they rotated the bridge.

actually you could have gone to volunteer your help in the turning of the bridge onto it's island.. it was a community event and there were articles in the paper telling you the date so you could help pull or something like that.

must have been early 2002 because the canal was opened for traffic in the spring of 2002
Posted by mewthree 12/16/2006 7:19 AM | remove
it was, the canal was still empty when that was done
Posted by nostra-YOUPPI! 12/16/2006 7:21 AM | remove
ok, next time they empty it, check out the lock doors sitting on the bottom at des seigneurs with concrete blocks on top of em so they dont float away
Posted by Blawkowski 12/16/2006 8:29 PM | remove
Yeah, I've seen thoses lock doors. They should get them out of the water and expose them to the public!
Posted by Emperor Wang 12/17/2006 12:22 AM | remove
Keeping them submerged helps to preserve them. There's another set underwater right across from Silo #5.
Posted by mewthree 12/17/2006 2:31 AM | remove
well since montreal isn't allowed to have dolphins and large aquatic animals in our aquariums anymore, they should at least use the tanks for holding stuff like old lock doors!

sadly due to design there isnt much in the seaway canal the seaway max ships do a good job finding stuff pretty quick since there is at most at low water a foot clearance. i would one day like to see the control basin in cote ste catherine drained (impossible though) since it is a mysterious body of water off the seaway canal that no commercial traffic goes through
Posted by mewthree 12/17/2006 8:34 PM | remove
well when they drained the canal for fixing it for recreational use they had an article in the paper mentioning how many cars they found..
Posted by nostra-YOUPPI! 12/18/2006 1:44 AM | remove
yeah, the first time they fully drained it was back in 1998 when they ran a natural gas line under it and they pulled the cars out then.
Posted by mewthree 12/18/2006 9:34 PM | remove
i always did wonder how they got the cars past the guard rails for the canal... a lot of the car models they found were car years after the rails were put up so...

i guess where there's a will there's a way! lol.

So next meet, we gather at the bridge and turn it ?
Posted by controleman 12/19/2006 2:24 AM | remove
  As we always do!

  Nice :P

Posted by mewthree 12/19/2006 4:20 AM | remove
i dont think you can. I went on there about a month ago and it seems that they have it almost balanced on stilts on each end.. well not stilts exactly but they put support struts or something under it.

I would PAY to go at night, turn the bridge and see the face of the cops called on site in the morning (actually I wonder how long it would take before someone alerts the authorities that the bridge has... turned on its own) lol.

haha, its like my prank de resistance would have been to light up the lamps at the turcot yards, too bad the miners got to it.

let's put our money together and buy at canadian tire a solar cell and a small 12v motor and gear box... il will slowly rotate all sunny day long.

Maybe the photographer got lucky. Seems I can remember trains going over this in the 80's. I mean I have crossed it on foot and I am pretty sure I was keeping an eye out for incoming.
Posted by nostra-YOUPPI! 12/23/2006 6:08 AM | remove
it did carry CN rail traffic to the port until the bridge was built below the locks. as for spek talking about caked grease go look at the gauron bridge, it has hinges that are now embedded in concrete yet they still ooze

  I'm willing to put a $20 on this :)
