Are you sure it was built into the earth? I've watched television programs that describe what we see here as part of the structures decay. When they restore them they jack the structure up and replace the lower boards piece by piece.

That's cool, I just wanted to offer it as a theory. Almost like the ground is trying to swallow up the cabin.

The ground isn't going into the shack, the logs that make up the back wall go up about two feet from the dirt to hold back the hill from going inside. It makes sense to me to have it built into the hill since it's just 20 feet from the water. Lake Superior is a violent lake and in a storm this shack might feel more like a submarine. If it's built into the hill a little then it's not going to be washed away as easily and the shock of huge waves hitting it would be absorbed into the ground.
