Saw one of the workers open a hatch and look up into the working furnace. Monkey see, monkey do! An insane amount of heat radiated out of the hatch, and it was really horrible air, so I wasn't able to get many photos! I could see ash raining down from above, and water jets may times more powerful than a fire hose sprayed up into the heat (I was told about that on a school tour here some years ago). I assume it helped keep the furnace as clean as possible for as long as possible. I was informed by a control room worker with a hardcore Scottish accent that the proposed installation of new more powerful jets was "a load of fucking bollocks". In his view, it was pointless spraying hundreds of thousands of gallons of water UP into the furnace only for it to be vaporised.

http://www.skeptic...greenhouse-gas.htm It's not just A greenhouse gas, but it's THE most dominant type. Bad idea to argue with a Scot about engineering matters, IIVQ.

The water jets are to assist washing away of the bottom ash/clinker which collects in the furnace.
