No, this is where the train cars would park, as many as 4 at a time. The big rectangular holes between the tracks drop into concrete chutes that slide the ore into ships that can park on the side of the dock.

Thanks. I think I understand how this place worked now. I was under the mistaken impression this this facility was for loading and unloading ships. Obviously it only did the former.

The ships normally unloaded coal, then took on taconite. The unloading was done at a separate dock with winched bucket conveyors.
