  Looked like unbleached cotton painter's dropcloth to me. Ashamed to admit I spent a minute wondering how they got such crisp folds into it... :)

  The wind had blown loose dirt off the neighbour's field, thus creating the illusion of sand. This actually made the snow crusty enough to walk on in many places.
