two speed rearend switch on the shifter... probably an 8 or 10 speed (1-5 hi range, 1-5 lo range)

Looks like an 8 given the markings on the shift knob

Works just like a 10-speed bike I guess. Do you shift through all 5 and then go up to the next rear end ratio and go through the rest? Or is it 1L, 1H, 2L, 2H, etc.? Or do you just skip over the odd gears unless you have a really heavy load?

1L 1H 2L 2H etc.. And you didnt have to use them for every gear, but some drivers did. Most just dropped it into High range at the end of the pattern sort of like an overdrive.

Does the clutch disengage the rear end or does that work differently from normal shifting?

with a two speed rear end, it's all in the rear differential unit, two different sets of gear ratios. If you were empty, there was really no need for low range... just simply shift 1-5 High range... Loaded, 1-5 Low Range until you got the beast rolling and then flip into high range.

one of the older Chevys we got from IP-Timberlands has the old 4speed... just getting into low is a pain in the ass.
