What's left of Lock 18, looking east at the Seaway International Bridge. Notice how the bridge crosses the canal at an unusually high altitude. Back in the 1950s, the Canadian authorities in charge of the Seaway were hoping that ship traffic would eventually justify building a 27 foot navigation channel and associated locks on the Canadian side of the river. So they built this bridge to the standard 120 foot Seaway clearance. Total number of ships passing under this part of the bridge since 1958: 0.
