Welcome to the Ontario Food Terminal Board: Established in 1954, the Ontario Food Terminal is the “stock exchange” for fruits and vegetables, where prices are determined by supply and demand and can change daily. It is the largest wholesale Fruit and Produce Terminal. It ranks amongst the top four Terminal Markets in Canada and the United States by volume of produce distributed. At 1,053,612 tons or 2.1 Billion Pounds (as of March 31, 2018) of produce distributed annually, this volume equates to an average of 5.6 million pounds of fruits, produce and horticultural products distributed daily from this 40 acre site. The Board operates the facility twenty four seven with a total of 40 staff. However, when tenants, buyers and suppliers are added to the number of persons employed either directly or indirectly as a result of the existence of this facility, an employment number in the range of 100,000 people is easily achieved. This number is a relatively conservative number, when one only considers over 5,000 Ontario businesses are buyers at the facility. It is the largest of such facilities in Canada. source: http://www.oftb.com/about-us

Before the facility was built in Etobicoke, the previous distribution centre was near the St Lawrence market downtown. At the time, it was considered one of the most congested districts in Toronto. It took nearly 10 years from when the land was bought for the new facility to when it was finally built. The move not only made sense in order to reduce traffic, but also because shipments of food starting being brought it with trucks as well as airplanes, rather than trains after World War II.

I've heard rumors that it's going to be flattened and turned into condos soon, (that's why I checked it out), but I doubt that's going to occur. After reading about it, it's clear that the facility is lucrative.
