A tiny wood frame building covered with about 4 inches of stucco and probably 12 layers of lead based paint on a half acre of prime commercial real estate in uptown Dallas. There had been some remodeling and some minor expansion but I think their business model was a limiting factor in their success. It simply outlived its popularity and you could get better food for less money down the street at a Burger King.

Claiming to be the longest continually operational drive-in restaurant in the country (needs verification) The Prince Of Hamburgers opened its doors back in 1927. The Prince served up greasy cheesburgers, real milkshakes and frosty rootbeer floats to 3 generations of customers along Lemmon Avenue, the closest thing to a strip Dallas ever had. Lemmon Avenue was a two mile stretch of used car lots, liquor stores, pawn shops, alternative lifestyle bars and blues clubs. The attraction of Lemmon Avenue and the little curb service drive-in covered more than 7 decades of urban culture. It was a hangout and meeting place for teen cruisers and cop cruisers alike. You could park under the red and white striped awnings and be served by the car hops or wait your turn to sit down inside the tiny dining room. I was working nearby in the late 70s and it was not uncommon for spontaneous Saturday night gatherings to exceed 50-60 cars overflowing a parking lot designed for about 30. Every once in a while it would close down without warning and everyone just assumed they were finally going out of business. But each time the health department shut the place down the owner would manage to clean it up enough to pass one more inspection and it would re-open. Spring of 2005 was no different. It was closed again and as I drove by I just figured they found some more rat droppings in the kitchen but when I noticed the Billy L Nabors wrecking company truck exiting the property I knew it would not be re-opening this time. The property had been seized by The State of Texas for failure to pay over $27,000 in back taxes. Well the food was never that great nor was the ambiance anything to write home about but it was a local landmark of sorts. The neighborhood had been going downhill for many years and many businesses and swinging singles apartment complexes nearby have been boarded up. Recently the area has been making a sort of comeback but old time drive-in restaurants like The Prince will not be part of that.
