Bicentinnaly/Kiley/NationsBank Park Plaza was built to honor the 200th anniversary of nation. It was originally envisioned as a park that would fuse landscaping and modern art into one coherent piece, unlike the absolutely insane "exploding chicken" on the corner of Kennedy Ave nearby. It consisted of a square grid with turf and trees, reflecting pools and channels for the water to collect and run through. An ampitheater was also built overlooking the river and is a great place to just chill. The City of Tampa is responsible for the upkeep of the park, and their policy appears to be "ignore it". Stones have been tossed to and fro by the natural progression of the trees' growth, the fountains have been turned off for years, and people are allowed to sleep there. The trees haven't been trimmed in years, and there is a massive canopy covering the park now, but it's not as beautiful as it was say in the late nineties. The turf has also turned to dirt, there is human excrement in the ampitheater, and what has not been allowed to die has been allowed to run amok. Sad, considering that Dan Kiley (b. 1912) is the only living landscape architect to have a landscape design bestowed with National Historic Landmark status, yet only he has the one piece of landscape architecture on the NHL list.

Gorgeous park atmosphere, which when maintained completely erased the fact that you were downtown. It was a place you could go and sit, or listen to some local musicians.

This park was begun in 1976 to honor the 200th birthday of the nation. It was finally completed in 1988 and was, truely, a work of art. It was comprised of fountains and reflecting pool, trees, modern art pieces as light fixtures and benches, and a half circle ampitheater overlooking the Hillsborough River and the Plant Hotel (aka the University of Tampa).

Both Nationsbank and Tampa Museum of Art want to expand, and this is the only place they can do it.
