Completed in 1901, the Victor H. Kriegshaber house is an outstanding example of the great Victorian houses that have become increasingly rare in Atlanta. Named after his daughter, Marianna, and in the spirit of the Beaux Arts Classical Revival, its elaborate and pretentious exterior ornamentation is unusual for what is essentially a one-and-a-half story, eight room (albeit 10,000 sf) house. The semi-circular portico features eight coupled fluted Ionic columns supporting the conical slate roof, which is trimmed in terra cotta and was originally outlined by a wood balustrade. On the north side is a porte-cochere characterized by smaller Ionic columns. Two dormers are tucked into the north and south side of the roof. The house is set on a rough-cut granite foundation, finished above in creamy yellow brick set in common bond. Besides the impressive portico, the window treatment is the most outstanding ornamental feature. Windows are trabeated with double-hung sashes capped by stained-glass transoms. Lintels are elaborate compositions of forms, crowned by a deep double-shell which emerges from curving, stylized wave elements. The main floor included an octagonal entry hall with a coved ceiling, the master bedroom, the dining room and double parlors. The molding and nine-foot-high pocket doors of the dining room are made of cherry. The wood-framed section in the rear housed the kitchen, bath, back hall and a bedroom. The house was originally surrounded by 34 large oak trees and a semi-circular stone drive.
